Some landscapes hold traces of what came before.

"Old Pilings on the Columbia River, Astoria, Oregon" caught my attention because of the repetition of the weathered pilings stretching across the water.

Against the broad river and cloudy sky, they create a rhythm that feels both orderly and slowly disappearing.

Black and white lets me concentrate on those shapes, the open water, and the quiet sense of time passing.

October has arrived, and the landscapes of Washington are beginning to shift toward the quieter months of the year.

"Moose Peak, Olympic National Park, Washington" reminds me how much I’m drawn to the structure of mountain landscapes. Ridges, lingering snow, forest, and open sky can be enough.

In black and white, I can focus on the shape of the land and how light moves across it.

Matching is for socks.

Art doesn't have to perfectly match the sofa, the rug, or everything else in the room. Sometimes the photograph you keep coming back to is the one that belongs there.

"Evergreen Guardians" is a fog-filled view across the Willapa Valley, with the evergreens reduced to layers of silhouettes against the light.

When choosing art for your home, start with what you love. You can figure out where it belongs afterward.

Fog has a way of simplifying a landscape.

I photographed this old silo near Raymond, Washington, as it emerged through the fog in the Willapa Valley.

Without much of the surrounding landscape visible, the silo becomes the clear subject. The fog removes distractions and leaves behind shape, tone, and just enough detail to suggest what lies beyond.

That's one of the things I enjoy about photographing fog. It can turn an ordinary rural scene into something quieter and more abstract.

I arrived at Corral Pass knowing the standing dead forest would hold my attention, but I didn’t know what the photographs would eventually become.

I spent the evening exploring, then started again at first light the next morning.

I began with the larger landscape. Gradually, I moved inward toward trails, individual trees, repeated forms, and quieter moments.

Later, eight photographs emerged from the edit.

The Forest That Remains is less about documenting the aftermath of wildfire and more about my experience of moving through a transformed forest.

The full project is now on my website.

Not every photograph needs a wide view.

Sometimes a small part of a building can say enough.

What caught my attention was the weathered wood, the irregular boards, and the dark window opening. Years of exposure had left their mark on every surface.

I found this old farmhouse while exploring rural Douglas County, Washington.

Today is World Gratitude Day, so I have a good reason to say thank you.

I appreciate everyone who follows my photography, reads my Field Notes, leaves a comment, visits a gallery, or simply spends a little time with the places and subjects I photograph.

Photography gives me a reason to explore, pay attention, and keep looking. It means a lot that others choose to follow along.

Featured here is Rusty Studebaker Truck, photographed at an old gas station in Pe Ell, Washington.

Thank you for being here.

A familiar region doesn’t mean a familiar photograph.

I return to places like Mount Rainier, the Olympic Peninsula, and the Gifford Pinchot National Forest again and again. But I rarely return to the exact spot where I made an earlier photograph.

I’m usually more interested in what else I might find.

My latest Field Notes article is about exploring familiar landscapes without asking them to give me the same photograph twice.

Sometimes a photograph connects us to more than the place pictured.

It might remind you of a hike, a camping trip, time spent outdoors with someone, or simply a place that felt good to be.

That's one of the things I enjoy about landscape photography. I bring my own experiences to a photograph, but everyone who sees it can bring something different.

It doesn't take a big waterfall to make a photograph.

This small cascade along upper Skookum Creek near Greenwater caught my attention among the moss-covered rocks and forest vegetation. It's a small scene, the kind you could easily walk past while looking for something larger.

I've learned that some of my favorite photographs come from paying attention to what's right in front of me.
