Everyone says Nebraska is flat and boring... they clearly haven't driven far enough west.

Lake McConaughy ,Chimney Rock, and Scotts Bluff completely changed my opinion of Nebraska.

Hidden right off I-80 in Ashland, NE is one of the most impressive aviation collections in the US-the Strategic Air Command & Aerospace Museum ✈️
Getting to stand directly underneath an SR-71 and a B-36 in the same building is unreal.

Who knew Nebraska could be so interesting? This week here are shots from my first 2 stops in the Cornhusker State: Omaha and Lincoln. Pic 1 is the Omaha Skyline from the Gene Leahy Mall. The crane is obscuring the famous Woodmen Life Building. 2 is artwork from the sculpture garden at the mall. 3 is Solo Arch & 4 is a Kaneko Head. 5 are the 2 largest train locomotives ever built located at Kenefick Park. To the left is the largest diesel locomotive, The Centennial, and to the right is the Big Boy, the largest steam locomotive weighing over 1.2 million pounds. These were really cool. 6 is Blackstone Plaza, the corporate HQ of Berkshire Hathaway. Maybe security saw me filming across the street. I hid my camera and everything, but was still turned away at the door. That was no fun.

Moving to Lincoln, NE, I was only able to make time for the state capitol pic 7. It's the 2nd tallest capitol building in the US. Pic 8 is the governor's mansion which literally right across the street. Pic 9 is another side of the capitol. 10 is a closeup of the Sower Statue at the top. 11 is the stairs leading inside. 12 is the welcome desk. Nebraska has to have the most fortified capitol in the nation. 13-17 are more interior views & 18-19 are views from the observation deck. Link to full YouTube video in bio

Here are shots from the Iowa State Capitol in Des Moines, IA. 1&2 are of the exterior. The total height is 275 ft and the dome covered in 23-karat gold. 3 is the interior of the dome. 4 is one of the state history murals. 5 is a legislative chamber. 6&7 are of the State Law Library. Really neat to visit. 8 is a book that was printed by Benjamin Franklin. Heading back outside, 9 is a Lincoln Statue, 10 is the Soldiers' and Sailors' Monument. It's 135ft tall. 11 is the Senator William B Allison Memorial. This one is a little strange. And Finally there's a shot of the Des Moines skyline.

Don't quite remember if you can't film inside or I was just pressed for time, but there's no youtube video for this stop. Still an enjoyable visit. Overall I'd consider Iowa a pretty friendly state as there's plenty of overnight spots. Next up we're on to Nebraska

This week here are pics of some Iowa Roadside Attractions. Pics 1&2 are Dexfield Park, which today is an unassuming pullout, but in its day was a popular water park and also was the site of an infamous shootout between the Barrow Gang, led by Bonnie & Clyde, and a 50-man posse. Amazingly, Bonnie & Clyde were able to escape. 3 is the Rocky Marciano Memorial in memory of the only undefeated heavyweight champion who perished in a plane crash at the site. 4-7 are pics of the site where the legendary Jesse James pulled off the first robbery of a moving train in the American West. Pic 8 is the entrance to Iowa 80, the world's largest truckstop, which always makes for a good overnight stop when traveling along I80.

On a previous trip I stopped at the Field of Dreams Movie Site and the Day the Music Died Memorial, so despite being firmly in flyover country, Iowa has seen a surprising amount of history even if its more of the darker kind. Link to full video in bio

My 2nd day at Indiana Dunes was mostly about completing the 3 Dune Challenge which involves hiking to the top of the 3 tallest dunes in the state park and I must say that hike was quite a bit better than the hikes in the national park section. Pics 1&2 are the view of Lake Michigan as you descend from Mt. Tom, the highest dune. Pics 3, 4&5 are the views from the top of Mt. Tom. 6 is the national park sign. I began that morning finishing up 2 sections of the park i wasn't able to explore the previous day. 7 is the view from an overlook of the Dune Ridge Trail and 8 and 9 are the Rostone and Florida Houses in the Century of Progress district of the national park.

The 3 Dune Challenge is a must if you're visiting the area. Again, it's in the state park which is surrounded by the national park and there is an entrance fee. While I enjoyed the hike and it's definitely great exercise, the dunes here are dwarfed by those at Great Sand Dune in Colorado. Link to full video in bio
