In a series of short conversations I ask an artist two questions about their work and process.

STEVE GREENE

MH: Your paintings consist of geometric structures and organic forms that overlap, intersect, and insistently propel themselves to the edge of the canvas. There are also collaged fragments that include catalogue clippings, product assembly instructions, and illegible handwritten lists. How do you think about your work and process?

SG: My work used to start with a collaged and painted abstract ground over which I layered recognizable images that had a specific meaning, and I felt it was important to be able to articulate that meaning. In time this self-imposed need to explain the work became an unnecessary burden. Shifting to abstraction has been liberating - I still think about what is implied in my paintings - surveillance, the body and mortality, connecting systems, maps and diagrams - but I’m not depicting specific things and I feel more freedom to let the work go where it wants to go.

MH: Some artists need subject matter as something to push up against, a personal narrative that acts as an inspiration or catalyst for their practice. For others it’s like so much baggage they tow around, getting in the way of pure expression. How did liberating your paintings from specific content affect your work?

SG: The change occurred when I began painting again after a long break, and I realized what I was interested in was that underlying structure that was already there in the underpainting, so the image on top wasn’t needed. Painting again after working on paper with a limited palette for years made it easier to discard old habits, rediscover color and try new working methods - to trust my impulses and my subconscious and not worry about communicating an idea. I love how a painting can start out to be one thing and then transform into something else entirely, and I love going up to the edges - like folding a spring into a too-small box.

We lost our little Shuggie last week. Got her as a rescue 15 years ago in Washington Heights. She was jealous of our other cat Bobo and sometimes mean to him, but she had a big personality and we loved her anyway. I never knew how much I would miss her. by @stevegreene8462
