Happy birthday to one of the GOATs, Paul Jackson! An important influence to so many of us bassists.
I made this track a couple of years back and was really trying to capture that Headhunters vibe.

The MXR Synth Bass pedal is amazing. I started experimenting with it fresh out of the box and right away I had this bass line idea. So I made a track out of the whole thing.

I’m definitely trying to channel a Greg Phillinganes kind of vibe here. But really, it’s every great key bass player I’ve ever heard that inspired this—Steve Wonder, Federico González Peña, George Duke, Herbie Hancock, Darrell Freeman, Morris Pleasure, Bernie Worrell, etc

@ianmartinallison @agapesoulmusic and all the wizards at @jimdunlopusa did a stellar job and I think this thing is an absolute game changer.

It also tracks an open B string without glitching. You’ll hear it. It’s in the intro of this track…

Let’s also not ignore the mighty @dingwallguitars SP-1 which I got a couple weeks ago and I’m loving it. I decided to add a little solo at the end so you could hear it. Big thanks to Nick Wells.

About this track:
I played and programmed everything. The drums are programmed from scratch using the great drum software Soulfi by @teletoneaudio. And the guitars, keys, and Moog are all me also.

Anyway, it’s been a minute since I made something and posted it on the ‘gram. Hope y’all dig.

Your pal,

SJ

I haven’t made a video in a minute so I decided to throw my hat in the ring and give the #cool7challenge a shot—warts and all.

Also, I wanna give a shout out to @brubakerguitars @nordstrandaudio @jimdunlopusa and @xlnaudio (the chorus on my bass is actually from the super handy RC-20 plug-in)

Right before I crash, I’ll usually grab one of my basses and play through some stuff (usually ampless because I’m winding down for the night). Tonight Sazi happened to be hanging out and he wanted to hear some @towerofpower so I wasn’t gonna say no. Watch until the end.

We had tons of fun at the @dallasguitarfestival this weekend! Thanks to @vurnt22 @stevejenkins and @biscuitrouse for playing and talking to the people. Thanks to @tjarmstrongbass for everything. Congratulations to @jaubreaker_music for winning the sweet Roundhouse in Texas 10 Under 20. It was fabulous to see @guitarslayer24 and really to meet and talk to everyone who came by the booth! In honor of the 10 years since Prince passed, here’s a repost of a MPLS funk inspired groove from a few years back. And just like Prince, I played/programmed all of the instruments.
