What a great time I had on @indieafpodcast expertly hosted by @sarahgolding and moderated by the illustrious voice actor and coach @tanyarichvo .

Another layer of honor is that the Brits have a long and storied history in audio dramas!

They asked me to audition an animated character with a wide range of emotional states. Then we evaluated my performance and discussed my process (which I could discuss and dissect all day long)!

Even though I felt exposed and vulnerable, I was in very nurturing hands of true artists!!

I love acting! I get to explore characters, plays and my imagination in original audio dramas as much as I have in any other venue — from the comfort of my professional home studio.

I’ve done more than 30 shows in the past year!

Huge gratitude to my agent @micaela_77 for believing in my talent and always sending me the best opportunities! @erisverticaltalent

I could not have improved and taken gigantic risks without the encouragement and belief of @brokenartsentertainment and @campfireradiotheater over the past year. Thank you! Please enjoy their podcasts too!

Now that I’ve had two weeks’ perspective, here’s some of what I learned when my toddler swallowed a quarter - in case it helps someone in the future:

— This happens so often that most medical staffers said, “oh just a coin?”;
— If the coin makes its way to the stomach, the most common advice is to wait and watch for it to pass;
— Small coins pass easier than large ones;
— Coins with serrated edges (quarters, dimes) have a more difficult time passing;
— If the coin is stuck in the esophagus, it’s usually not an emergency, unless it’s blocking the airway;
— Symptoms for an emergency are wheezing, coughing, drooling;
— Coins aren’t as dangerous as small, flat batteries and magnets;
— It is not helpful to eat or drink if you think something is stuck in the esophagus;
— It’s very difficult to find a toddler’s vein for an IV, so be prepared for multiple trials and lots of tears;
— Prepare yourself for the unexpected: you’ll see your child go under anesthesia; come out of a procedure with dead eyes; your child will look to you for answers when you have none; you’ll try to stay calm when you’re coming apart internally; you’ll sleep in chairs;
— Double-check your child proofing. A toddler will definitely find the obscure items and inspect them like a beginning sense memory student;
— expect to be exhausted for the week after. It’ll sneak up on you because the event seems over, and it’ll surprise you that the rest of life feels uphill, yet meaningless.

Remember that the entire experience — visiting a hospital, the ER culture, examinations by strangers, questions, x-rays, shots, gowns, multiple waiting rooms, wheelchairs, crutches, a million beeps and overhead intercoms — it’s all new for your child.

At every stage, tell them what is about to happen, then what is happening, then what just happened. Repeat it twenty times if necessary. Instead of feeling surprised and confused, they’ll trust your help and that the strangers are there to make them feel better.

Trust is the most important bond we can build with our children, and the most fragile. When we build trust, children believe us and when they believe us, they relax and learn to trust their own intuition. by @stevemize_la
