I had a genuinely wonderful time last Wednesday catching up with the old photog crew at the Ed Kashi presentation. So many happy faces I hadn’t seen in way too long, especially my old road buddy Ed from the UT Athletics days. What a treat! This gaggle of shooters has been making it work, somehow, in Austin for a long time. Loved seeing you all, talking the biz, talking life, talking future. The presentation was pretty good, too 😉. Much love to @juliarphoto and @austinphotonight for partnering with @briscoe.center.ut to put this shindig on. Today was Wiggle’s adoptaversary - this is a photo from her car ride home from the shelter, and our first kiss! She was on her way to the wonderful new life we gave her 😊

I’ve needed to write this post for a while, but there was too much grief, it was all too raw, and I was fogged by heartbreak.

But I owe it to the memory of this wonderful creature to give her a tribute. Pig brought so much grace and warmth to our lives, and a lot of work and care, too. And I’m a better person for it.

So here it is. My words, inevitably inadequate, seemingly too few, but apparently too many for IG. I could have written thousands more.

Board Member Highlight: Steve Moakley!

Steve has served on the Board of Directors since 2016. He became interested in TRC after volunteering with their former job search program. A multimedia producer, Steve spent nine months in 2014 shooting a photo story on the community garden program after befriending Congolese refugees during a workshop in Cape Town, South Africa.

“My favorite part of serving on the Board with TRC is any time I spend photographing at the farm or textile studio. Getting to interact with the refugees and staff is incredibly rewarding and always brightens my day.”

’m still riding high from an amazing birthday weekend.

I had thought about how to properly celebrate my 50th birthday for a long time. No matter what I conjured up, I knew there were only two ways I wanted to do it - with my twin sister AND with as many good friends as possible. Since Kate lives in Oregon I knew that getting both of these at the same time might be tough. But she found a way to make a long-weekend trip to Austin and I managed to get a party together in time for many of my friends to make it.

Saturday night arrived and before I knew it, I was surrounded by some of the best people I’ve known in my entire life. Childhood friends, college friends, former roommates, friends I’ve met through Natalie - a wonderful mashup of people from all different parts of my life. Exactly what I wanted. Even my best friend from childhood, who grew up a block away from me, came and celebrated HIS 50th birthday which fell the day before mine and Kate’s. Unbelievable.

A midsummer party can be a tough schedule, and I went into the weekend a little bummed that some close friends couldn’t make it. But what ended up transpiring was absolutely wonderful: an almost intimate shindig where people from throughout my life got to mingle and share stories and crack jokes, and I got to chat along at some point with every single one of them. THAT’S what I wanted more than anything!

So much love to my incredible twin sister for making the trip; to Natalie for helping me plan (and getting me moving on it), to Rich for having an awesome funky venue to host us and of course to Cassie for staying late and tending bar 😊. And so, so much more to all the wonderful people who came out to celebrate with us. I’m a truly fortunate individual to have so many awesome people in my life that I can count as friends.

Thanks to you all for being a part of it.

I gave this card to my wife for our anniversary because I found it to be cute and clever, and because it reflects my appreciation of her influence on our son’s curiosity and fascination with nature.

Then, at breakfast this morning, he said something wise, yet simple, that had never even occurred to me, which proved my point:

“That is a chameleon.”

Damn straight.

This is the second oldest thing on earth that I have stood next to, after the Pyramids. At 1,000-2,000 years old, The Big Tree just outside Goose Island State Park is a pretty remarkable organism.

It’s the start of a new growing season at @therefugeecollective farm. Seeding the Mexican mint marigold plants took place recently as we begin the process of creating natural dyes. First step was filling lots of trays with our own compost/soil mixture. Then tiny holes 1/4 inch deep were pressed into each one. A tiny marigold seed was dropped in by our team members and gently covered up. Now we wait for them to sprout in the greenhouse and before being planted in the spring. It’s such an exciting time at the farm! by @stevemoakley
