finally moved to new york city yesterday. i’ve been wanting to move to this city for so long… since i was 14. i’ve visited this place so much over the years and every time it just felt right. it was so hard leaving Indiana. after five years there, i’d grown to really love the pace of living and all of the beautiful people and places. i still always had my heart set on nyc one day. i can’t believe that day has come… it still hasn’t totally hit me. much love to all who encouraged me and supported me towards this big decision. there’s lots to do… can’t wait for @fetalbabushka to come back!!!! time to try and get on broadway or something idk taken in Central Park, New York by @stevenellisday

this summer i had the pleasure of receiving a grant and being mentored by Dr. Reed Spencer from Taylor University to write and compose an original musical theatre song cycle. this Thursday we show it to an audience in a one-night-only workshop performance. this process has been so challenging but so rewarding. i’m scared but also so proud and thankful for the work that the cast, musicians, and my mentors Dr. Songer and Dr. Angell have poured into this show. Hymns of Babel attempts to expose the core of social media and to reflect on our authentic emotional experience with technology. it was a lot to tackle and i’m sure i fell short in many ways but i’m so grateful to have been given this creative opportunity. much trust was required and i don’t take it lightly.

Hymns of Babel performs at 7:00 this Thursday in the recital hall followed by a talkback with me and Dr. Spencer.

hi everyone

i am 23 today! (not 35… but the picture felt fitting… shout out to @songer_shoes for taking it 📸)

very thankful for the past year and i can’t wait for all that awaits me in the year ahead.

life update… recently i received a grant to write music and lyrics for a musical theatre project… for a long time it’s been a dream of mine to be given an opportunity to be a composer/lyricist, so this a really exciting time for me. i am so incredibly thankful for this opportunity and for Dr. Reed Spencer from Taylor University for mentoring me through this process. some very challenging but very exciting discoveries have been made along the way. the subject matter i’ve chosen to write about is social media which is where we are now heyyy!!! but ill be keeping updated on my instagram about that project and maybe asking for some of your input to guide my research and exploration, so keep an eye out!!

in other news, i’m on track to graduate college in the december and then out into the world i go!! i’m very scared but excited!!

if you’d like to give me a birthday gift, here’s some options: listen to the album “Norm” by @andyshauf, or Laurie Lortie’s recordings of Ravel’s Valses nobles es Sentimantales; watch the movie Coraline; read Top Dog/Underdog by Suzan-Lori Parks; eat chocolate dippin dots; pick up an instrument and play; take some time to write a poem or read one of @fetalbabushka’s; find some time to skip. those would all be super cool gifts!! for now, take a deep breath and make an intentional choice about what’s next 🫶🏻 by @stevenellisday

about a month ago, my college found out that we had the honor of being chosen to take our production of The Birds to the Kennedy Center College Theatre Festival. this past week, after closing the show 4 months ago, we took this show out of a storage unit (literally) and began our work. we practiced building the set, performing the show, taking the set apart, loading it into a U-haul, rinsing and repeating.

about a month or two ago, this particular feat felt incredibly daunting. my struggle with anxiety and depression made me believe doing something like this was impossible. it is by the grace of God and by the support and encouragement from those who love me that i was able to do what we did this weekend. i am so grateful for the the overwhelming support from my family and from my friends and faculty at Taylor.

i have learned so much in my time with The Birds and in my time with my character, Nat. i am so thankful for this experience and for the people i shared it with.

i am loved, i am capable, and i am not alone. thank you, body. thank you, mind. thank you, partners. thank you, God.

It's hard to sum up an experience like this one. I have been so blessed by this story, this process, and these people… By the power of Izzy’s portrayal of Tom Robinson. By the joy that Ethan, Jaelynn, and Jaxin brought me. By Ronnie, Lauryn, Alisha, and Kharis—those with whom I treasured each moment we spent together. By Bella and Josh, my sound operators, who strenuously refined the sound design while I was in Atticus mode. By Sara Bailey, who literally came to the rescue and saved me during tech weekend. By Emma, who guided us through this story so steadily and honestly. By Katelyn, and her consistency & kindness as she helped me through quick changes, only for me to walk onstage with my zipper down… By Sylvia, and her heart-breaking complexity during Mayella’s testimony. By Lee, who always makes me laugh. By Conner, whose beautiful music made us all cry. By Amanda, and her bliss, by Hannah, and her passion… For every person who devoted their time to telling this story… I proclaim thanks to God for putting each one of you in my life and for the ways you have been a blessing in my life. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

we are servants to the art. we bring our loaves and fishes and pray the Lord may turn them into abundantly more than we can imagine. my entire theatrical experience at Taylor has proven over and over God’s faithfulness in this promise. i’ll look back at The Women of Lockerbie not as a moment but a monument of the power of the incarnate—the word becoming flesh— and the necessity of communal experience. the work may seem daunting and the task may feel greater than what we are capable of, but we are not alone.

i’d like to express some gratitude for the beautiful season of shows we were very fortunate to present last year at Taylor.

after beginning the year with a two-and-a-half hour rock musical, outside, in masks, the rest of the year felt impossible LOL. but the Lord blessed us with four more beautiful mainstage shows. im so thankful for all that Godspell taught me about Jesus. im thankful for the unbelievable beauty of the story of The Little Prince. i’m thankful for the privilege to have been able to sit and listen to Jamal, Izzy, Tameisha, and Lauren pour their hearts out every night in Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner. i’m thankful for the seeds that I pray Student Body planted, and for what the show taught me as an actor and collaborator. and i’m incredibly grateful for all of the wonderful things that Elwood taught me. thank you so much to all who dropped by mitchell and supported our productions. we’ve got great things in store this year!
