In Navajo spirituality, places of worship such as churches, synagogues, mosques, and temples are not built. Instead, the elders teach the youth to convene at sacred sites, like mountains, just as the ancestors did. They tell us that the Holy People (spiritual beings akin to angels) constructed the mountains and canyons as places for us Surface People to dwell in order to discover and rediscover ourselves. To connect with the Great Spirit, then pray to Him in peace. A dwelling to reflect on our struggles, and figure out a path to overcome them. Nature heals. The endless wonders of the natural world frees us. The wind blowing through the leaves, the waves crashing onto the stones, they bring me a moment where I may feel present, rather than reliving a disheartening past. I no longer watch the trauma replay through my eyes, I now see the enchantment of the Earth, in all her glory.

Different religion, but Jesus once said, "Upon this rock I will build my church." Personally, I've always interpreted that passage as, "We don't need a magnificent building. Our glory is in the message that's taught, not where it is taught." Maybe my interpretation is wrong, but I feel like God can be with us anywhere, in affluence or destitution. There are churches adorned in gold leafing, marble flooring, and oil paintings by master artists, but there's a disconnect with God at most of these places. A disconnection that stems from pharisaic preaching, greed, or strange lust.

In my despondency, I tried to runaway from God. Less than 24 hours later, while searching for something new, I found Him once more through a Native American tribe that already knew Him long before the colonizers and missionaries arrived to the West.
