I’m thrilled to announce that I’ll be joining @carnegiemellon as an Assistant Professor of Human-Computer Interaction (with a courtesy joint appointment in Social and Decision Sciences) in 2026!

My future lab—the Psychology of Technology Lab—will focus on how emerging technologies, such as social media and AI, interact with important psychological variables, including polarization, conflict, and mental health. Visit my website (stevenrathje.com) for more.

In my recent interview with @tristanharris, I described our series of experiments finding that interacting with sycophantic chatbots entrenches beliefs.

However, people prefer sycophantic chatbots and even fail to recognize when they’re being sycophantic, describing them as “unbiased.”

As @tristanharris noted, chatbots are using the tactics described in the book “How To Win Friends and Influence People” to win over our engagement.
