Every accomplishment starts with the decision to try.

Well 10 years ago after having lost three and a half stone in weight and got myself healthier, I decided to try running to get myself fitter. This is a look at a few brief moments along my journey to review some amazing moments in time.

I never expected that I’d run for more than a few months, but 10 years on and I’m still running. Despite several months off injured last year, plans are afoot for events into next year already. Which means I will have to get a new passport before long.

One year on …

One year ago today we left the hospital with our Daughter Kelly-Marie after an horrific two months in both her life and ours. A major abdominal operation to remove a large mass stuck to all her organs almost took her life.

Somehow she fought and survived Sepsis. It’s taken months of recovery and to get her more confident in going out and about again. We’ve made it to Prague for a few days and also Disneyland Paris recently where she met Mickey Mouse. She’s still having several down days but generally is much happier again.

Kelly-Marie has also seen Take That in the ‘Circus’ concert in Cardiff and is looking forwards to seeing them again next year. We have a couple of other concerts coming up very soon too which she will enjoy. It’s lovely to see her happy again and not in pain, and we can make plans to do as much as we can in the near future.

We are so blessed that she is still with us and we can put last year behind us. by @steverunz

Parkrun 143 - Riverfront.

Another early start to travel over the Severn Bridge and another new venue today in Newport. I’ve wanted to do this one for a while and preferably before the winter rain sets in. It was overcast but the rain held off. There were a few more runners than normal as some were doing their pre Cardiff Half shakeout run but 399 didn’t seem too crowded really.

I ran with one of my Sons @ryan_palmer5 who was one of the faster runners up the front. The run was an out & back course alongside the River Usk. All pretty flat really, a few bumpy cobbles and watching out for a few bollards. One I’d be happy to return to and do again one day as it was only 40 minutes from home.

I was 90 seconds quicker than last week which was nice to see. My fitness is still nowhere near where it needs to be but it’s improving, 40:02 - 362/399.

Parkrun 142 - Stonehouse

Finally back out running & walking. (After a week away in Disneyland Paris and then a week off ill). I did a 5k on the treadmill on Tuesday but it was good to be doing a Parkrun again, my 31st location. The weather was great, sunny and 13° The course was a 4 lapper around some playing fields but very flat.

I found it hard going due to lack of fitness and being on grass, but a very friendly bunch of volunteers. Hopefully I can get back to some consistency in running again. Not my slowest parkrun (that was last time out), but an enjoyable Saturday morning run with my Son Ryan, and his wife Rachel taking the photo.

At the end of the day, I got out, I ran the distance, I wasn’t last, and I beat everyone still in bed. I’m looking at another new location for next week. 🗺️

💜 Happy Birthday Kelly-Marie 💜

I’m so pleased to say these words to Kelly-Marie this morning when we woke up. After a dreadful time a year ago, we’ve seen her get stronger and get back out and about. She is so looking forwards to her Birthday party with all the family later today. 🎉🎂🍰🎈🎊

After weeks of hearing about her Birthday and party food, it will now be all about Christmas 🎄🎁😆

Love you so much sweetheart ❤️ I hope you enjoy your special day and your big birthday surprise to follow.

Parkrun 141 - Kingsway

A short trip up to Gloucester this morning for my 30th location. The weather started off cooler and the temperature didn’t rise too much. However I hadn’t run since last Saturday’s parkrun, so just went to enjoy the run.

I ran in the new pink @twistedrunning performance vest with pink clouds in a tie dye effect vest. It was so light and comfortable I forgot I had it on. The sweat wicking was amazing and I felt dry at all times. Well worth the cost and I can’t wait to see what other colours will be on later version’s later in the year. I absolutely loved it. 💖 Also pink Twisted socks.

Unfortunately a sciatica problem I’ve had for a few weeks now flared up towards the end of the first of three laps around the route and hampered me. I actually walked more than I ran but I got around and completed it to get my K for the Alphabet challenge and the Parkrun challenge.

Kingsway is so easy to get to, just off the M5 J12. Free parking across the road, free toilets, cafe and extremely friendly marshals. One of the flattest parkruns around. A great venue on tarmac, gravel and grass.

Left foot, Right foot, Repeat.

Parkrun 140 - Five Arches.

I managed to get up early today and make a 45 minute drive down to Radstock for my debut run there. Not only was it my 140th Parkrun, but it was their 140th event too. So I achieved the Match Challenge and I got an F for the Alphabet challenge. Annoyingly I missed one of the four number’s I need for the stopwatch challenge by 1 second again.

It was my first run outside for a few months, it was hard but I got it done. It was a pleasantly warm 17° in the sunshine. It was good to get started again after a bit of a break from running. I was fully kitted out with my orange @twistedrunning Summer kit and it was a delight to run in.

Not quite as flat as described, but a nice quiet Parkrun on the route of the old Railway Line from the Somerset & Dorset Railway. Free car parking, free toilets and a child’s play park near the start. A big turnout today with 191 runners and walkers. I wonder where I will go next week.

Today was the day we walked in a field of sunflowers in the sunshine. 🌻

A super day for a walk in a farmers field in Wiltshire.🌻
We were totally surrounded by thousands of Kelly-Marie’s favourite flowers. 🌻 The bees were buzzing all around. 🐝 Despite being 28° it didn’t feel too hot. To see Kelly-Marie so happy and full of smiles it was well worth the heat. Every day is memorable with her when she is so happy after last year’s health problems. Logan loved watching the bees and ladybirds 🐝🐞 on the Sunflowers. 🌻

We picked a few choice blooms and snipped a few with the secateurs to bring home. 🌻🌻🌻 Logan had a couple of blooms to take home for his Mum and Dad who were both at work. 🌻🌻 This is definitely a place we will revisit in the future. taken in Chippenham, Wiltshire by @steverunz

Six days in sunny June ☀️

We’ve had a lovely little city break in Prague.
The weather was fantastic however it did get very hot hitting 40° on our last two days there. This meant as the week went on sheltering in the shade as much as possible, drinking plenty of water (no alcohol) and taking plenty of breaks from walking too.

The views are amazing in the city and we definitely did revisit a few of the tourist hot spots. We had some lovely food and resisted overeating too many treats.

The fire service were amazing and were seen often in the old town spraying water to cool the crowds. If only I could get to follow one of those on a half marathon. We also revisited the Prague Zoo, the best we’ve seen in Europe and America so far. You need at least 5 hours to see everything like we did before, but we cherry picked what to see this time and only spent half that time there.

The architecture and artistic statues around the city are forever changing styles and are very imaginative. The spitfire butterflies are unique and quirky and we also saw ‘Lilith’ the five storey steel woman supporting a building. Franz Kafka’s head was a revisit, whilst we also had to head to Charles Bridge (Karlov Most) again. The statues there are so special and the views of the River Valera and the Castle and Cathedral that look down from the hilltop are stunning. There’s still so much else to see that we will have to consider another time. taken in Prague, Czechia by @steverunz

Not just a random spot.

The times I’ve passed this spot without taking this iconic photograph. Recreating the photo taken of Dave Gahan of Depeche Mode back in 1988 on the amazing Charles Bridge.

This year’s visit to Prague I got it done, as well as a few others in the same area. This is so stunning, every time we visit we are blown away. This is one of our favourite cities in the world. Today however it was so hot and exploring too far had to be held off due to the heat.

Parkrun 139 - Evesham.

My 3rd Parkrun of the year, and today it was Evesham.
A lovely little spot running alongside the River Avon. Mostly a grass course (which was a little bumpy), and a gravel path. Lovely scenery on the River and a nice cafe at the end. I found a free car park too.

I didn’t push the pace today, I just ran at a comfortable pace as much as I could and I did walk a bit too as I’m on a fitness restart. I could have pushed a little more at the end to pull in another runner, but decided to keep it easy for now. Work still needs to be done over the coming weeks to get back to where I was or better.

This afternoon I walked around at Bourton-on-the-water, where it was packed with far too many tourists and it was hard to enjoy it as much as normal. But the sunshine made it all good. ☀️

LEFT FOOT, RIGHT FOOT, REPEAT.
