Art Below - Summer 2009 - London Underground

Summer 2009 brought together artists working in very different ways: Steve Schofield’s portraits of devoted Star Trek fans Jason – Brighton and Stuart and Keith – Luton; Ben Moore’s Pink Stormtrooper, an early glimpse of ideas that would later evolve into Art Wars; Matt Black’s memorable Shark!!; Philip Levine’s Coruscate photographed by Daniel Muhind; Helena Hölzl’s vibrant Ladies!; Anna James’ Verona; Coris Evans at Paddington; Františka Louber’s The Animal I; Scarlett Massel’s Omnificence; Barnaby Wills’ collaged portrait at Holland Park; Marin Magnus’ Life in the Fast Lane at Marylebone; Christopher Ryman’s My Freedom; Algimontas Ramanauskas’ luminous Untitled at Old Street; Oskaras Oljericic Solo’s Chloe at Angel; and works by Francisca Lauber and others shown throughout the network.

Bad news about David Hockney. I photographed him at his home in Los Angeles in 2014 for a cover for The Observer magazine. Incredibly grounded and friendly. He was excited about his new work and keen to show me what he was working on in his studio. I was amazed by his openness and how, even after such a long successful career, he still had such a huge enthusiasm and boundless energy for painting. A genuinely nice man and a pleasure to photograph. A real loss.

A few unpublished outtakes from my shoot last year with Aimee Lou Wood at the recently shuttered Holborn Studios. I shot there a lot over the years, and started assisting other photographers there when I first moved to London years ago. An important part of London's photo history, finally a victim of the property developers.

An outtake from my shoot with Rami Malek for @empiremagazine 13th July, 2018. I'd shot Rami once before in LA when he was doing Mr Robot so I knew he'd be really laid back and easy to work with.. This shoot was tied into the press for Bohemian Rhapsody and pre his Oscar win. A pleasant day with good people.

I shot this on New York Street on the Radford Lot in Studio City, 2015 to celebrate that season's talent lineup on CBS for The Hollywood Reporter. I believe the street was set up for Brooklyn nine-nine at the time, but I think some of the Seinfeld set was on the left (the soup shop? @beardedimmaculateconception will correct me if I'm wrong!)

Such a great crew on the lot that day from CBS who helped us set up, looked after us and were generally amazing people.
