Tonight has been wild in Dubai - sitting here at 3:40 a.m. on a balcony while a storm has been raging all night. Clouds engulfing the @burjkhalifa , torrential rain, and howling winds. Then, for just a brief moment, the clouds parted and a single bolt of lightning struck the top of the Burj… the money shot right there and the one I have been waiting for all night 😂💰 Shot using my Sigma 14-24mm ART #dubai #storm #burjkhalifa #lightning #visitdubai taken in Burj Khalifa, Dubai by @steviekahn

I was recently out in the Al Razeen desert, trying to capture the last of the Milky Way season, and came across this perfect S-curved dune. It immediately reminded me of the Mac Mojave wallpaper! Photographing the Milky Way in the UAE is always a challenge due to the summer heat and humidity, which often coincide with the galaxy’s visibility. Last week, I ventured out with my star tracker and modified camera. After my usual struggle with polar alignment in the dark due to my poor eyesight and general clumsiness, I finally managed to set up the star tracker and capture some consecutive 30-second exposures with my Sigma 35mm lens. The dune in the image was actually behind me and not facing the Milky Way, so this is a composite shot! Since returning home, I’ve been experimenting with new editing software like PixInsight and StarXTerminator (I used to be cool when I was younger). These tools have helped me produce more detailed Milky Way photos and reduce the dust and sand that often appear in the images from this region. Looking forward to figuring out how to use my modified camera now! #abudhabi #milkyway #astro #nightphotography taken in Al Razeen Desert by @steviekahn

One second. One chance. Two hours into the desert. Middle of the night. A ridiculous amount of camera gear. And a very specific moment that lasted approximately 0.7 seconds! @pixtarami and I drove out to capture the International Space Station transiting the Moon - one of those rare occurrences where you have to be in exactly the right place at exactly the right time. Miss it by a fraction of a second and… congratulations, you’ve just driven two hours into the desert to photograph the Moon. 😂 This image was shot on my prehistoric Canon 5DS R a camera that is about as subtle and elegant as carrying a small fridge around! But its 50-megapixel sensor came in very handy when it came to cropping in on the ISS. Everything was shot using the Sigma 150–600mm. The first image is heavily cropped to show just how close we got to the ISS crossing the lunar surface. Swipe through for the full story: 🎥 Video 1: The ISS crossing the Moon at real-time speed - blink and you’ll miss it. 🎥 Video 2: The same transit slowed down to 0.5× speed so you can actually appreciate what happened. 🎥 Video 3: The rather ridiculous amount of equipment we took into the desert. Rami’s setup is considerably bigger and more expensive than mine. (Size clearly counts for him.) 😂 🌫️ Final video: The drive home at around 1am, when Abu Dhabi decided to throw a ridiculous amount of fog at us. Visibility got pretty ropey and, I’ll be honest, it was a little scary. A lot of planning, a lot of driving, a lot of gear… for 0.7 seconds. Would I do it again? Absolutely! #moon #iss #abudhabi taken in Abu Dhabi Desert by @steviekahn

Standing tall. Standing proud. 🇦🇪 Big thanks to @sigmauae and @pixtarami for hosting such a great rooftop photography workshop. Brilliant to meet some fellow photographers from around Dubai, talk about life and, most importantly, get the cameras out and actually shoot! We were treated to this incredible view over Downtown and the Burj Khalifa, lit up in the colours of the UAE 🇦🇪. Sadly, it’s a view that won’t be around for much longer with construction soon set to block much of it! This made it even better to have the opportunity to capture it while we still can. Sometimes it’s easy to get caught up in planning the “perfect” shot, so it was just nice to get out, enjoy the evening and shoot Dubai with a good group of people. Thanks again Sigma & Rami for organising and hosting us! 🙌 Shot this on the Sigma 24-70mm. #Dubai #BurjKhalifa #DowntownDubai #Sigma taken in Burj Khalifa By Emaar by @steviekahn

Lighting up the future. Summer is finally starting to lose its grip, which can only mean one thing… photography season is nearly back in Dubai. The cameras are coming out, the tripods are going up, and the sweat is (hopefully) going down. 😂 Winter… we’ve been waiting for you!
