“Wayne” from Wayne’s Gun Musical - by Olga S. Popova Performed by Stevie Rivers.

Wayne.

Casting the main character of your musical — especially when the musical is literally named after him — is always terrifying. 😂

I usually like to work with people I already know. And you can judge me all you want, but sometimes I hear a certain voice in my head, and I just associate it with the character.

For Wayne, that voice originally belonged to my good friend Jaylen Bunch, an incredible actor.

But then his schedule became impossible, and he called me and said:

Olga, I think I have someone who can replace me. You’re going to love him.

Apparently, Jaylen had been training Stevie while we were preparing, just in case he couldn’t do the show. And when I first saw Stevie, I was… hmm - this guy had a different energy from what I imagined for Wayne.

In my head, Wayne was this difficult, confrontational teenager. Stevie looked like such a good guy - great energy really - TOO GOOD haha.

But then I started seeing what he could actually do.

And THAT was when I understood. Wayne isn’t just a dark or difficult kid. He’s an anti-hero. He has choices. He makes mistakes. He tries to do the right thing and sometimes makes everything so much worse.

And Stevie had the range to show all of it- singing-wise AND character-wise.

Having Stevie Rivers play Wayne has been nothing but a pleasure.

He is one of those actors who keeps surprising you. You think you’ve figured out what he can do, and then he shows you something completely different.

And honestly, I think that’s exactly what Wayne needed.

Sometimes the person you imagined for a character isn’t the person who ends up being right for it.

Sometimes they’re even better. ❤️
