It's easy to think the glass is currently half empty, especially in the UK and the USA when it comes to the LGBTQ+ community, and it's true things are not as good as even a few years ago, but watching Heartstopper Forever one scene in particular has stuck with me these last few days, it's the one with Derek Jacobi, and here's why.

Sir Derek was born in 1938, so he was Nick and Charlie's age in 1955/56. Homosexuality was illegal in the UK, as described here:

"According to the Wolfenden Committee, in 1954 there were 1,069 men in prison for homosexual acts, with a mean age of 37. It found that between 1945 and 1955 the number of annual prosecutions for homosexual behaviour rose from 800 to 2,500, and that in 1955 30% of those prosecuted were imprisoned."

There were no Pride marches, no openly gay pubs or clubs, no school societies, no meeting openly with friends, no positive representations. But there were hundreds of men in prison for the crime of being themselves.

And this is all still with living memory, Sir Derek's life time has seen his now able to be married to the person he loves.

So yes, times aren't always great at the moment, especially for the Trans Community, but they've been a lot worse even recently. It's up to us all to make sure society keeps moving in the right direction and we don't let the bigots drag us back to the 1950s.

Thank you @heartstopper for bringing so much Queer joy into the world 🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍⚧️
