At the start of the month (just in time to celebrate my birthday), I had the pleasure of joining the students and faculty at the Rocky Mountain College of Art + Design as the inaugural artist for their FRICTION Series through the Visiting Artist Scholar + Design Program.

My lecture, titled “Three Scouts, Three Artists”, was ostensibly about my practice as an artist and art historian. Speaking at length about my research into the myth-making of a post-frontier United States vis-à-vis the Boy Scouts of America (now Scouting America), I focused on the life stories of two other Scouts turned artists, George Nakashima (also an Eagle Scout) and Clyfford Still, to emphasize the legacies of the frontiersman and the soldier. Pulling from their archives—including my time at the Clyfford Still Museum last year—I asked how being part of the Scouting movement as children may have influenced their studio practices as adults. I also discussed how the contradictions of my being an Eagle Scout of America’s most influential nationalized youth organization, being the son of immigrants, and being gay, make for compelling fodder in my own studio art practice. I ended the event by highlighting other artistic inspirations of mine and showcasing my latest works on paper at The Residency at Flora (which you can all check out at my exhibition opening on November 6th)!

I also had a blast having students come to my studio the next morning at The Residency at Flora to see what studio life is like.

In our next featured painting for 15 Paintings in 15 Months, you get an incredible glimpse into how Clyfford Still worked. As our curator Bailey shares in the video, this canvas was heavily reworked. The mottled, splotchy forms are a direct result of Still insisting on hand-mixing his own paints, which sometimes meant the canvas dried unevenly over time.⁠

Meet PH-316 (1944), the fourth reveal in our 15 Paintings in 15 Months series!⁠

Do you see how those earlier figurative shapes start to show up in this piece? A dominant, wrench-like brown form anchors the piece, while sharp accents of yellow, blue, and a fluttery crimson shape activate the surrounding space. It’s a remarkable glimpse into Still’s evolving visual language.⁠

Step into Gallery 6, where composer and sound artist Michael Schumacher’s sonic interpretation meets Clyfford Still’s PH-716 (1970).⁠
⁠
Schumacher’s track constructs a vivid audio portrait of Still’s world. Listening closely, you’ll hear the clatter of trains and cars (two of Still’s passions), the rustle of notebook pages, typing, and pencil scratches from Still’s home tape recordings, blended alongside violin, trombone, piano, and sudden, striking pauses of silence.⁠
⁠
Just as Schumacher utilizes near-silence in quieter passages, Still leaves vast expanses of bare canvas between his bold paint strokes.⁠
