I spent all of the spring and summer worried about the bumblebees I wasn’t seeing. They have finally turned up, visiting the mallow and the sunflowers. Everything has been off-schedule this year.

My beloved grandma passed away yesterday at the ripe old age of 100. It was not unexpected. I think I cling so much to life and nature because I’ve experienced so many losses in the last 14 years. My heart aches for my children, who’ve missed out on the marvelous grandmother experiences I had.

This is why I don't keep my garden perfectly tidy... I was waiting for a hummingbird when this adorable Lesser Goldfinch landed on a weed I hadn't removed, and began snacking! Isn't he cute?!? Also, I'm always amazed that they can balance on these or on single stalks of grass without knocking them down! A reason to hope in a world full of bad news media: there are at least 12 Monarch butterfly caterpillars in my garden right now. It’s April and I’m already wondering how much more $ I can afford to spend on milkweed this year! (Last year’s seed starting was not a success…)

I made the plant marker at @standardceramicsstudio in hopes ceramic will hold up better than wood or metal.

Heard about a great horned owl nest in a little park nearby. My bird-watcher aunt was out from NYC for my grandma’s 100th(!!!) birthday, and we took an hour to go look and we FOUND it! Saw one of the parents and at least one of the babies stretching its wings. This is an 11 acre pocket park in the middle of suburbia, and a haven for things that are #stillwild I’ll go back another day with my camera.

Not counting eggs or caterpillars that have gone into chrysalis or already hatched we have at least 37 very hungry monarch caterpillars in our garden right now. The milkweed is looking very ragged and I don’t think we have enough to get through the season.
