Bossmundur Móri is 12 years old today. Let me introduce you to one of the best-traveled Icelandic sheepdogs you will ever encounter. He has been to Iceland, the Netherlands, Belgium, France, Spain, Portugal, Denmark, Sweden, and Germany.

Having Móri in my life has shaped it in more ways than you would think. For over a decade now, Móri has been by my side, experiencing life together.

Starting in our home in Iceland back in 2014, Móri grew up alongside my family. When I decided to move to mainland Europe, Móri took his first-ever flight. He came with me to school and, since then, to the offices where I have worked. I have convinced at least three Dutch offices to allow me to bring him with me on the daily. Móri has seen friends come and go, and he has met the (former) partners who I felt were worthy of the introduction. Now he is so obsessed with Jordy that I take it kinda personally. No love for the woman who takes you to the vet, huh?

Dogs are here to make us present, to make us see the “now” that is in front of us. Móri does not hold grudges or harbor unruly ambition; he simply lives moment by moment. His priorities are food and cuddles. I admire his commitment to reminding us every day at 17:45 that he needs dinner at 18:00. You should see the drama that unfolds in our home during daylight savings.

As Móri ages, we slow down. Our walks are shorter, and we take breaks on the way. Móri would much rather chill on the couch nowadays than play fetch. That is simply how life goes. His health is still good; he has bad knees, but who doesn’t at 84? And his breath is brutal—it will clear out a room. For some reason, I find the stink very comforting. It’s like a quick reminder that he is in the room with us.

Today we will be going to the woods by our home. Celebrating the ever-present fluffy boy who has no understanding of how well-travelled he is. by @stina_erlings
