Designs graphics for film, music, art and events ☘️
POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
Today we simply must celebrate the second anniversary of Studio Stina Sandström! Im TWO!

My goal this year was to work less (spend less, live more!) and it’s been great quite frankly. It’s made me way more efficient when I do sit down to work. I’ve always been a fan of letting projects ruminate away from the computer. I’m so much smarter when I’m not looking at it, doing something else. Shorter days, many long breaks, this 4 days week thing (at the very least!) is a no brainer!

I’m using this anniversary thing as an excuse to get some work up on here so get your eyeballs involved!

I’d like to humbly thank the clients for bringing me all these stimulating challenges!

Mummers dressed as horses and birds dressed as mummers in costumes made of straw are playing tunes in carnival procession for @seancorcoranseries 2025. This traditional arts festival promises experiences such as these but in real life and in Drogheda in September every year. Behold a series of posters and drawings for some of the many events. by @stinasandstrm

Stina Sandström designed the visual identity for Dreamshook. She runs her own design studio and works primarily within the arts, creating graphic identities for visual art, film, music, and events.

Her ongoing clients include The Douglas Hyde Gallery, Project Arts Centre, IMMA – Irish Museum of Modern Art, Claddagh Records, and The Button Factory, alongside collaborations with individual musicians, artists, filmmakers, and festivals. Stina also teaches as a guest lecturer on the Graphic Design programme in IADT Dún Laoghaire.

Undoubtedly the best way to enjoy a drink at @BarAnamDublin (see previous post) is to pair it with the adjoining Korean fried chicken at @dakdublin. I developed the two brands simultaneously and as sibling identities: the bar, run by one brother, and the restaurant, run by the other.

Sticking to the (F’ed Up but inescapable and gas) tradition of using a happy mascot of the animal you’re about to eat for a logo, I drew a chicken within a rigid geometric framework. I get great satisfaction from true geometric work when I multiply them into patterns and they all fit like modular pieces of a puzzle. Even though such a pattern may be useless and rarely sees the light of day, it’s a game I enjoy playing and it hides some kind of secret logic beauty I think. Despite this rigidity, his lil feet make him look so alive… at least for now…

And look at him up there now, all big on the exterior windows, catching the eyes of hungry drivers and creating a cosy diffused patterned light for the diners inside. Deeelicious! taken in Dublin, Ireland by @stinasandstrm

Here’s a rare branding thing I did earlier this year for a well needed oasis at the hectic junction of Dublin’s Bolton and Caple Street. @baranamdublin offers dignity, natural wine, Korean chicken, sharp cocktails, tunes and a lovely summer’s breeze.

Anam is the Irish word for soul. While scratching my head over what would make a suitable logomark for this painfully abstract concept, I immediately thought of the Irish legend of the Children of Lír where four children are cursed and their souls trapped inside the bodies of Swans. No swans live nearby Bar Anam so I scrapped that particular bird, but allowed myself to segway onto pigeons. They live there in their thousands and they, at least their loftier cousin the dove, are commonly known to represent the human soul, purity, peace, and the divine spirit(s). Get that pigeon a drink!

Also did you notice that bAr AnAm has three whole A’s in it? That deserves not only A monogram but also AAA holy trinity knot of the Triple Goddess, the maiden, the mother and the crone!

It was great to soak it up and drink it all in the other day. Loved seeing how well the branding works with the gorgeous design of the space by @mortarandmore and cudos to @rossapub and @kelgrade for the dab hand with rolling out the design on menus, signage and socials themselves. by @stinasandstrm

Shortly after working on the exhibition Staying with the Trouble, (see previous post) IMMA got back in touch about developing the visual identity for their art and ecology festival Earth Rising of 2025. The themes of the festival program were so closely linked to those of Donna Haraway and the exhibition that it seemed a good idea to draw from the same graphic system, building on the same principles and thus visually linking the exhibition to the festival.

The modular maze system, based on the idea of “tentacular thinking” was adapted to a predominantly digital rollout. Through the use of motion the arches connect, disconnect and trace multiple branching pathways, illustrating non-linear neural-like networks of connection and entanglement.

The mirrored form of the logotype’s rising motion was intended as a hopeful “rising out of the ashes”, or “the Earth (up)Rising through collective action” type thing, however incidentally also seems to reflect the threat of rising sea levels. A “happy” accident as they say.

In the slides you can see the identity rolled out through a foldable poster–programme with an integrated map, a riso-printed poster distributed across community noticeboards, outdoor advertising, and a substantial digital campaign with animated stings and event-specific templates. The identity also extended into the physical festival environment through event backdrops, podiums, lanyards, wayfinding, and signage

This was a while ago now, and how nice to be reminded of this project! A rare and wonderful occasion where I got to work closely with the wonderful curatorial team inside the IMMA Galleries and hang the exhibition graphics in situ. It was like a very big board game.

Staying with the Trouble was IMMA’s major group show last year, inspired by the writing of feminist theorist and philosopher Donna Haraway. It brought together over forty Irish and Ireland-based artists whose work echoes Haraway’s writings and push back against human-centred ways of thinking and suggests other ways of living—inviting visitors to reflect on the present and imagine more connected futures.

With the exhibition design I wanted to illustrate Haraway’s idea of “tentacular thinking” as a spatial graphic system. Haraway proposes tentacular thinking as a non-linear way of thinking about our relationship with the natural world that reflects natural patterns (in trees, plants, mycelium, root systems, tentacles), follows several paths of inquiry and allows for entanglement and connections.

The design is a series of A2 posters with arches that all connect depending on its orientation and form a maze when hung together. The posters were wallpaper-pasted directly onto the gallery’s surfaces, across doorways, corners and ceilings.

The installation process was wonderfully meditative, and creating these new routes across the walls felt much like a game (reminiscent of Ken Garland’s Connect) of responding to the architecture and creating the most alluring paths through it.

Here’s a gig for the annals. Seamas’s (@seamy_h ) gigs are radiating, joyful and sublime and here is also @meabh.mckenna and @aoibhinnodea and @rf_chaney and @duff_fluff so bring your dancing shoes, it’s gonna kick off.

I had a great time making this poster by going wild with the Difference transparency mode in Illustrator. I find this poster super satisfying and happy to stare at it for a while and wonder at the technologies that makes it possible to make things that you couldn’t plan ahead. A big happy accident! That’s my favorite kind of work! by @stinasandstrm

Day 5:

Here’s some designs for @campaign4arts campaign to retain, extend and expand the Basic Income for Artists pilot scheme.

The final report into the impact of Basic Income for the Arts shows that working in the Arts in Ireland pushes many into financial precarity, and even poverty. There should be no barrier to beginning a family, or a pension, or even an appointment with a dentist. There is unequivocal evidence now that adopting this scheme and expanding it to include a larger group is essential.

@campaign4arts need your help to make sure that Basic Income for the Arts becomes a reality and isn’t relegated to the graveyard of pilot schemes.

This was an interesting design challenge, to put energy into bureaucratic words. The catalyst was an idea about artists resourcefulness and ability to make something amazing out of very basic materials.

Well done everyone, and congrats to those who got the February extension! Keep the hope alive those who haven’t yet received BAI, and the rest of us, non artists, let’s keep pushing for this so that the next step is a universal basic income for all! Sure what’s the point of technological progress otherwise??
