🐍SNAKE NIGHT REVIEW 🐍

Snake Night is a great YA graphic novel that will have readers turning the pages swiftly so they can discover if Rose Day can discover if alchemy truly is a not only part of the scientific field but also possible to do. All in the name of getting into the science club at her school.

I really enjoyed the vibrantly drawn tale that follows Rose and her best friend and fellow ‘geek’ Elijah on an adventure that takes them far from their familiar but often unwelcoming school where they both feel invisible? To a secretive school where students study at night, and obscure classes are taught - and within this unsettling school, the duo must search for answers and learn the truth about a mysterious book Rose’s famous archaeologist dad has hidden away; albeit poorly.

Although I’m older than the intended audience, the story drew me in. I was eager to discover what would happen to Rosie, Elijah and a student at the strange school. Trouble follows them from the moment they are unexpectedly caught. Unsure whom to trust or where to find answers, they become entangled in a millennia-old mystery as Rosie seeks to prove that alchemy is real and can be recreated. The saying ‘curiosity killed the cat’ kept coming to mind. The Greek mythology, particularly Medea and Jason’s quest for the Golden Fleece, had me hooked. I’ve always felt that Medea deserves greater recognition, both historically and today. 》

I hadn’t realised this was part of a graphic novel series. I simply wanted a fun read, having not picked up a graphic novel or comic book in a long time. The story offers adventure, suspense and entertaining characters. I especially enjoyed the animal librarian, who reminded me of Discworld’s librarian, famously an orang-utan. I would have liked to see more of him, as his animal nature offered plenty of scope for chaos. The somewhat open-ended conclusion left me expecting another page, with many unanswered questions about several characters, such as ‘What by @stitchsaddiction

Current read - Academy of Muses by @andreatothemax, as part of a tour run by @topplingstackstours. My review will be up on the 6th November ♡

♜ ACADEMY OF MUSES SYNOPSIS ♜

Legendborn meets The Da Vinci Code in this “inventive, compelling” (Kirkus Reviews) light academia contemporary fantasy and “whirlwind romp” (Publishers Weekly) following a teen who infiltrates a secret school for the descendants of exiled Renaissance masters to steal their long-lost arts and sciences.

Steal from a hidden utopia.
Fake date your nemesis.
Don’t fall for your mentor.
And whatever you do—don’t get caught.

For centuries, Ada Castle’s family has searched for the Genesis Institute: a secret utopia where the descendants of exiled Renaissance masters study arts and sciences so extraordinary they feel like magic. So when Ada is rescued from an attempted kidnapping by the institute’s handsome, brilliant, and completely off-limits recruiter, she seizes the chance to infiltrate the school and finally steal its advancements for the rest of the world.

To access the institute’s most guarded knowledge, Ada must earn a place in its elite guild system under the guidance of the recruiter-turned-mentor she’s quickly falling for. But when a new friend disappears, she’s forced to fake a relationship with the school’s most dangerous—and dangerously attractive—student, who’s convinced she’s a spy and is determined to prove it. Which is a problem, because there’s a reason Genesis has managed to stay a secret for centuries…and they will kill to keep it that way.

As devastating revelations come to light and Ada’s understanding of right and wrong starts to blur, she must choose who to betray—the family whose mission she has always believed in, or the school that has completely reshaped her beliefs…and her heart.

I am taking part in a tour for Snake Night by @iramarcks with @topplingstackstours and I'm sure it's going to a fun one.

Look out for my review on the third for this graphic novel that's released on 26th November.

🐍SNAKE NIGHT SYNOPSIS 🐍

Hidden passages, secret societies, and cryptic conspiracies . . . at this school, a failing grade is the least of your worries.

Rose was just trying to get into her school science club―on her own terms, without the help of her famous scientist of a father. All she has to do is convince the club leaders that alchemy is a serious science. But when her attempts to capture video evidence lead her and her best friend Elijah to a mysterious night school rumoured to dabble in alchemy, they stumble into an ancient conspiracy involving a phantom snake, hidden codes, and the fabled guardian of the Golden Fleece.

As Rose digs deeper, the line between myth and reality begins to blur. With new friends at her side, she must navigate secret passages, alchemical puzzles, and dangerous truths before the night swallows her whole.

Oh how I loved this duology and I'd love to see it animated perhaps because it would be so good. Do check out my review below and on slide two's caption.

📼 SUNDERWORLD, VOL 2: THE UNFORTUNATE RESPONSIBILITIES OF LEOPOLD BERRY SYNOPSIS 📼

I’m so happy to return to this world and Ransom Rigg's writing.

SUNDERWORLD, VOL 2: THE UNFORTUNATE RESPONSIBILITIES OF LEOPOLD BERRY left me reeling as Leopold ‘Larry’ Berry, Emmet and Isabel faced challenge after challenge. Surely, they’d endured enough in book one? Apparently not! This finale introduces seemingly evil characters, explores Leopold’s connection to Sunderworld and delivers an ending that left me wanting more.

Please, Ransom Riggs, take us back to Sunderworld with a novella or prequel. Many readers, including me, would love to immerse themselves in your dystopian fantasy world again.

Despite the gap since book one, I easily picked up the story, though Riggs keeps the reasons behind events tantalisingly elusive. Seeing the trio united warmed my heart as they sought answers, challenged lies about Leopold and investigated his parents. His pain over his father’s distance and lingering grief for his mother felt almost tangible. Their support for one another moved me. Leopold and Isobel shoulder far too much, yet remain positive and determined to find justice, even at the expense of their safety and physical and emotional well-being.

I wanted to start as soon as my Waterstones order arrived, but with five books already on the go, I had to wait. Once I began, I couldn’t put it down, reading over 300 pages in one day. Riggs’s addictive writing kept me invested as the story hurtled between crises. Leopold and his friends really are magnets for trouble! I also enjoyed discovering more about his father. Strict and distant, he clearly has hidden depths, and Riggs skilfully opens that particular Pandora’s box. Then there’s Orville, one of Sunderworld’s monsters, collectively known as Noxom. Terrifying and dangerous yet hilarious, he brings welcome humour to tense, unsettling moments. 》

My November TBR.

There's several ARCs on here for tours and from Netgalley which I'm excited to read.

I'd also like to thank @blackcrow_pr for sending me Folk Songs for Trauma Surgeons that both myself and my husband are curious about.

What's your November looking like?

October comes to a close with All Hallows Eve letting the realms be closer for a short period of time.

I did choose an awful lot of books on my tbr and I only missed one off which is now on November's list.

I'm up to date with @jfjohnsbooks after getting to read Sand Trials before it was published, thank you lovely.

I cannot say enough about A Song of Legends Lost by @mhayinde, nor with The Harbour of Hungry Ghosts by @elizachanwrites and both books in the Goddesses of the Underworld by @nikita_gill.

But there were so many others, a fair few need reviews posting so I'll be busy in November!

Happy Halloween, Blessed Samhein and let's go Lewis in the Mexico Grand Prix tomorrow.

⛩️ HARBOUR OF HUNGRY GHOSTS ⛩️

I love Eliza Chan’s storytelling and had the pleasure of meeting her at my local Waterstones, where she discussed Harbour of the Hungry Ghosts. I already owned the book, but hearing her talk about it made me even more excited to read this story set in Hong Kong during the Opium War.

I absolutely loved the worldbuilding and depiction of nineteenth-century Hong Kong, particularly how its traditional Chinese architecture and landscape are gradually invaded and, dare I say, polluted by British architecture and culture. (I still cannot understand why Brits abroad feel the need to recreate the familiarity of home through food, buildings and everything else, so the colonialism in this book had me grinding my teeth.) Eliza brings Kiamling Au and her family to life so vividly that you become completely immersed in a world where arrogant British invaders aren't the only threat. Creatures from myth and legend really do exist.

Kiamling comes from a family of demon hunters, following a tradition passed down through generations. Raised by her overprotective and critical grandmother after demons killed her parents, she's strong and determined, but her independence and flaws often lead her into trouble. I loved her from her first appearance. Perfect characters who always do the right thing rarely feel relatable, and Kiamling's imperfections make her someone you can genuinely root for.

The British colonial setting highlights the blatant disregard many British people had for the countries they invaded, their people and traditions. This becomes the catalyst for Kiamling's journey of self-discovery, forcing her to navigate a dangerous new reality where traditional rules of exorcism no longer apply. Cantonese spirits (yaoguai) begin mutating and merging with British folklore, which is a brilliant yet disturbing idea. 》
