Ready Readers, C.A.R.E., the City of University City, Missouri (Official), and PNC celebrated the opening of a permanent storybook walk and little free library today at Fogerty Park in University City. Thank you to Dr. Ruth Banks, a member of Change and Action for Racial Equity (C.A.R.E.), for inviting us to join the celebration. The Believe Projects partners with C.A.R.E. to supply young adult books for little free libraries and with Ready Readers on several initiatives, including storybook walks along the Great Rivers Greenway.

This storybook walk features Lindsay Bonilla’s You’ve Got This: “Jaws tense. Chest heaves. Take the shot. Just believe! You’ve got this!” Now, every child who enjoys this educational park experience will leave with an empowering message: BELIEVE in yourself, because you’ve got this!

It was a My Super Duper Me weekend with the St. Louis County Library. On Saturday, September 26, 2026, I had a wonderful time representing The Believe Projects at the library’s Little Readers Festival at the Florissant Valley Branch. Organizers reported more than 800 attendees this year, several more than last year. We were thrilled to give away all 400 of our picture books and young adult books and to meet so many wonderful children and families!

On Sunday, September 27, 2026, I had the honor of speaking with children’s picture book author and NFL Super Bowl champion Malcolm Mitchell at the Clark Family Branch. His multifaceted personal story offers a message for students, teachers, and parents alike. A common thread runs through his three books; The Magician’s Hat, My Very Favorite Book in the Whole Wide World, and My Super Duper Me: confidence and self-belief can inspire a love of reading! As Malcolm emphasized in our conversation, reading is one of your greatest skills, your very own “Super Duper!”

One of my favorite quotes from Malcolm Mitchell’s My Super Duper Me is: “Today is a Great Day. Dream Big. Believe. Hope.” Wise words for all of us.

“Rarely, if ever, are any of us healed in isolation. Healing is an act of communion.” bell hooks; the beginning words in National Book Award Winner Eizabeth Acevedo’s latest young adult novel, Anger is Only a Shadow. St. Louis County Library Foundation’s Reading Garden Series for Young Audiences and The Novel Neighbor presented Mrs. Acevedo in conversation at the Clark Family Branch on Tuesday, September 22, 2026.

Her latest novel is a story about family, the essential power of love, and a girl named Lil who knows she is anything but small. There the story begins asking the reader to join Lil’s journey to become “…free.”

Elizabeth Acevedo’s The Poet X and Anger Is Only a Shadow should be required reading for middle and high school students. Her authentic voice, beautifully crafted language, and thought-provoking stories inspire young readers’ curiosity. Together, these elements deliver resonant messages like in Acevedo’s closing words to the event audience: “… tell her, we write to remind ourselves that we are still here, and that we can still heal.”

It was an honor to attend the ULSTL Urban League of Metropolitan St. Louis’ 2026 Salute to Women in Leadership celebration. I’m grateful to my friend Carol Daniel, Senior Producer of Listen St. Louis at Nine PBS, Director of Save Our Sisters at ULSTL, and a former Salute to Women in Leadership honoree, for the invitation.

This year, the Urban League of Metropolitan St. Louis recognized several outstanding women leaders. Its highest distinction, the 2026 Lifetime Achievement honor, went to Bahraini human rights activist and parliamentarian Dr. Aysha S. Mubarak; media pioneer, author, producer, and philanthropist Jayne Kennedy Overton; and award-winning actress, producer, and conservation activist Pam Grier. As each honoree reflected on her journey to the stage, one message stood out: tenacity is the inner strength that sustains us until joy arrives.

I was especially excited to buy Jayne Kennedy Overton's book, Plain Jayne, have her autograph it, and take a photo with her! I’m doing pretty on growing my collection of signed books this year!

I was pleased to see members of my family-tribe, the place where I came from and that shaped me; Pamela Fountain, Sherria Evans, and Izaiah Weaver. Their presence reminded me that what we received within our close-knit community of faith continues to blossom into beautiful, transformative experiences. Because of this, I am grateful!

Everyone, do not miss Daley’s latest project, Strange Nature, dropping tomorrow. He launched his tour at City Winery St. Louis on Wednesday, September 16, 2026. His collaboration with Marsha Ambrosius, “Headlights,” is the one to watch out for as a hit streamer!

If Daley comes to your city, don’t miss his incredible concert! He’s back, y’all, and don’t forget, music is literacy, too!

Today, I was excited to receive an autographed copy of Phill Branch’s memoir, Double Dutch Fuss, thanks to my friend Damon Mosley. On Wednesday, September 9, 2026, Damon and Phill were in conversation together at the Martin Luther King Library in Columbus, Ohio; sponsored by Columbus Metropolitan Library. In the memoir, Phill reflects on growing up in Newark, New Jersey, in the 1980s and on his difficult relationship with an absent yet demanding father. His story drew me in through his experiences at Hampton University, an HBCU, where many moments may resonate with HBCU alumni.

In my view, this book is well worth reading because it shows how a tenacious spirit, expressed through a distinct personal perspective, can still lead to “the win” in life! From time to time, we all need inspiration that helps carry us toward our “win”!

Thanks, filmmaker, writer, and producer Damon Mosley for giving me this autographed memoir as a gift. Thank you, Phill Branch, for the gift you have given to the world!

Today, I’m celebrating my friend and author Mary Woolford/Maria Woodriff, whose book I Don’t Feel Like It is now available at the Missouri History Museum bookstore. Through the story of Tim and his mom, Mary beautifully and comically shows that commitment means returning the love we receive, and that kindness is always essential.

I Don’t Feel Like It, supported by St. Louis Black Authors of Children's Literature, became a favorite among parents at the community festivals we attended this past summer. Drawn to its title and illustrations, many parents said, “This sounds just like my child.” and “I’ll choose this to help my kids enjoy reading and learn important lessons.”

If you’re in St. Louis, visit the Missouri History Museum at 5700 Lindell Blvd., 63112, and pick up a copy, or two, of I Don’t Feel Like It by Mary Woolford. Read it with your children, share a laugh, and learn together!

Literary crusader and New England Patriots Super Bowl champion Malcolm Mitchell shares a delightful picture book celebrating the power and joy of words! Welcome to a day in the life of Theo, the new kid at school. He’s the only student who eats alone, ends up at the back of the line, can’t throw a ball far enough, gets mixed up in math, and reads slower than everyone else. Then Mr. Burton, the new school librarian, arrives with a Super-Duper Bookshelf that changes everything!

Join me for a conversation with Malcolm Mitchell about this wonderful new story and what it means to be smart, brave, and determined! The event will take place at 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, September 27, 2026, at the St. Louis County Library's Clark Family Branch, 1640 S. Lindbergh Blvd., St. Louis, MO 63131.

A word to the wise, “You don’t have to be fearless to chase what is true, just brave enough to take the next step in front of you.” Mr. Burton, The Librarian, “My Super Duper Me” by Malcolm Mitchell
