For people I don’t know, I thought it was worth re-introducing myself. My married surname is Narracott, which is a great name (especially given its provenance from Devon from the people who lived in the narrow cottages), but for my writing, I take my maiden name, Stonehill. I’m Rebecca, often known as Bex, but also Becks, Becs, Becca, Becka, Beck and Rebekita. If in doubt, just call me Rebecca :-)

This photo of me was taken a couple of nights ago in medieval Dragon Hall in Norwich, home to the National Centre for Writing. My great friend Chloe @chloemayyates took it (an amazing playwright and human, do give her a follow) and I just couldn’t resist a photo under this beautiful archway of books. I’m ridiculously obsessed with books and have far too many on the go at the same time.

Here, I’m clutching a copy of @seanehewitt Open, Heaven after listening to him in conversation with @moniqueroffey. I can’t wait to read it - sounds amazing.

I know you can’t see what these letters say, and that’s ok, because I can tell you. They come from the London Magistrates Court and I keep being sent these identical missives, telling me that I have a new date for my hearing for my arrests in 2025 for holding signs reading ‘I oppose genocide. I support Palestine Action’. It then goes on to say that I do not need to attend.

Confused?

Me too. The courts are in chaos.

And I’m also confused as to why Palestine Action hasn’t been de-proscribed when the state of Palestine has now been recognised by the UK. And that Israel is increasingly being seen as a rogue state with a public boycott of any goods from settler territories in the West Bank, a distancing from the Israeli government and vast numbers of UN delegates walking out of the auditorium last week in defiance of Netanyahu’s insistence that there has been no genocide in Gaza amidst his tired trope of anti-semitism. I mean, does he really believe his own lies?

Yesterday hundreds were arrested at the Labour Party conference in Liverpool for holding the same sign, many of them pensioners. And many of them Jewish. For how long will this government continue to support this farce (and continue sending weapons to Israel) whilst far-right activists take to the streets to intimidate people with barely a rap on the knuckles and, far more importantly, people in Gaza and the West Bank continue to be killed. As of the end of August, 77, 036 people have been killed in Gaza alone since 2023, no doubt a conservative estimate and many of them innocent children.

Find your backbone UK government, and do the right thing. And a good start would be de-proscribing Palestine Action.

Summer 2026 Reading List!

The first picture is my summer reading list, the second is my 18 year old daughter’s @lily_catarina_ (No prizes for guessing what her passion is 😅). Happy to see in her pile a little mama support too, ha ha.

📚 I who have never known men by Jacqueline Harpman.

This is my current read. My dear friend Wren @renemaggiepetersen (with whom I have a shared passion for all things bookish) insisted I read this. It is extraordinary. Why is this novel not more in the public consciousness?

📚I gave you eyes and you looked towards darkness by Irene Solá.

This was chosen by my oldest friend as part of our online book club which has been going since lockdown. We are a group of women from the UK, Norway, Kenya and the Netherlands and I really look forward to our discussions. This novel is translated from Catalan and looks great.

📚 Long Island by Colm Tóibín.

I adored the book that this is the sequel to, Brooklyn, and can’t wait to dive into the next instalment in the life of Eilis.

📚There are Rivers in the Sky by Elif Shafak.

Gifted by the wonderful @carboncyclekate earlier this year, I am a huge Shafak fan and am also obsessed with all things rivers these days, so really cannot wait for this one.

📚 Love, Anger & Betrayal by Jonathon Porritt.

In contrast to the Shafak novel, I can’t deny that I’m not hugely looking forward to this book by @loveangerbetrayal but at the same time, it feels so important to read. And I know I owe it to the young people whose stories and voices fill these pages. George Monbiot says of it: ‘Magnificent and crucial. A lodestone for all we believe in.’ As an extreme heat dome settles across Europe in the coming days, reading this has never felt so urgent or apt.

📚On the Marsh by Simon Barnes

Because I love a local book, and this one, with its strap line of ‘A year surrounded by wildness and wet’ sounds delightful. The author tends 8 acres of marshland in Norfolk that backs on to his house along with his son Eddie, who has Down’s Symdrome, helping transform it into a thriving wildlife habitat.

Inspired by the popular, long-running radio show, Desert Island Discs, I wanted to let you know a little about my new little business, Lighthouse Lullabies which I am inviting people to be interviewed for. Rather than being castaways on a Desert Island, guests will be high on a cliff top above the crashing waves, sequestered alone in a lighthouse where they guide the ships and boats in and out of a safe harbour.

From there, I will interview people about their lives and, just like Desert Island Discs, music will be pre-chosen to represent significant moments or periods of one’s life. Alongside music, there is also the option of choosing special places, poems or works of art.

Record your voice and memories as a precious keepsake, either for yourself or for your loved ones.

I have a super early bird discount until the end of May on thr next Climate, Nature & Life writing course I will be starting in September!

This will be the fifth online course I am teaching and I have been humbled and inspired by the incredible community that has been built through it.
