With America’s 250th, we had the great honor of being included in @rayisle’s “The History of American Wines in 25 Bottles” for @foodandwine! Our 2022 Norton was highlighted as the wine to try for the “American grape” era of our industry. This era is a vital part of the story of American wine’s past, but we also believe it is an even more important aspect of America’s wine future. As climate change wreaks havoc on traditional wine regions and sustainability becomes a louder demand from American wine drinkers, grapes like Norton in regions like Missouri provide an answer to what American wine needs to look like in the future. Norton, a primarily-native grape, has been grown in Missouri since the 1840s and was selected specifically due to its inherent natural resistances to harsh climate conditions and disease pressure. While its natural viticultural adaptations were key, its staying power was due to its ability to create beautiful, and uniquely American, wines. This was most clearly on display when Stone Hill Norton was crowned the “Best Red of All Nations” at the 1873 Vienna World’s Fair. While its majesty in the glass has been mostly forgotten today, we believe that many wine lovers across the globe will soon be toasting with glasses of Norton once again! We just finished hand picking Norton grapes right out front of the winery for a very special whole cluster project. Last year, we did the same experimental project and have just started tasting the wine from it at an exclusive Noble Norton tasting experience that we are offering on Saturdays. Today, we finished harvesting Norton grapes at our Kemperberg Vineyard. All that remains this vintage is hand harvesting at Cross J Vineyard and at the small vineyard in front of the winery. The Norton grapes are looking and tasting great so far, so we are very excited to work with them in the cellar. We’re nearing the harvest season finish line now!

There’s nothing quite like discovering a local treasure that makes Hermann so special. In this week’s spotlight, we’re visiting Saleigh Mountain Leather Co., a mother and daughter-owned business with a history dating back to 1973 with Sally’s leather bags. From handcrafted leather goods to shoe repair, the shop is filled with decades of craftsmanship, family history and plenty of stories to tell.

Harvest is well on its way! We’ve just hand picked a very important block of grapes, our Old Vine Reserve Norton vines. These vines were planted in 1863 and continue to produce fruit almost every year! 2026 gave us some great fruit from the second oldest vineyard in America!
