Our real-time monitoring network is expanding! From 10 instruments in and along Boston Harbor, the network will now have 22 instruments along the coast of Massachusetts from Ipswich Bay to Fall River to the Cape and Islands.  🌊

Overland flood sensors are a major part of this expansion which increase the availability of real-time flood data. Anyone interested in flooding conditions can view this data in our dashboards. Visit stonelivinglab.org or the link in our bio to learn more! taken in Massachusetts by @stonelivinglab

Happy #WorldOceanDay from Boston Harbor! 🌊 Dr. Aly Putnam, Post-doctoral Research Associate here at the Stone Living Lab, is sampling seaweeds across the northeast coast to test how canopy-forming seaweeds might tolerate shifts in ocean temperatures and other climate change impacts.

Seaweed plays a major role in the marine environment— from creating habitat, providing food, and absorbing and cycling carbon. These qualities that make seaweed a foundational species also make it an impactful climate solution.🍃

We’ll be joined by Dr. Marccus Hendricks, Associate Professor of Urban Studies and Environmental Planning at the University of Maryland at our next seminar for a talk examining how “cascading and emergent water risks” arise at the intersection of aging infrastructure, environmental variability, and social inequality.

Dr. Marccus Hendricks will demonstrate how cascading risks, such as stormwater runoff, create emergent hazards that extend beyond traditional flooding to impact public health, housing, and well-being. The talk also highlights sensing technologies and advanced GIS modeling to track water and infrastructure, monitor performance, and assess real-time conditions.

Stone Living Lab Director Dr. Katherine Dafforn has been named in the @time 100 Next 2026 list of influential leaders for her work to strengthen coastal resilience, enhance biodiversity, and improve water quality through the Stone Living Lab's work.

Katie leads the Lab in various research initiatives to adapt to coastal change through pilot projects, not only in Boston but in coastal communities across Massachusetts.

We’re so excited to see her impact be recognized alongside conservationists, star athletes, artists, and innovators from all over the world. Huge congratulations, Katie! 🎉

Our Real-Time Monitoring Network captured the impact of this past weekend’s Nor’easter at station sites along the Massachusetts coast. 🌊

Wind speeds and wave heights rapidly picked up Friday afternoon and continued to rise, peaking Saturday night. The highest wind gust observed by the Rainsford Island Weather station was 50.6 mph on Saturday. Both wave buoys in our network observed elevated wave heights throughout the weekend.

The combination of strong winds, high waves, and elevated tides led to coastal flooding across Massachusetts. The Lab’s network of overland flood sensors observed flooding at Tenean Beach, Long Wharf, Marshfield, and Fall River.

We set out to test whether @livingseawalls habitat panels support biodiversity in Boston Harbor throughout freeze-thaw cycles and hot New England summers. Following the first 8 months of biological monitoring of our Living Seawalls project sites, we’re excited to share findings in our latest technical report!

Ecological communities on the Living Seawalls show typical colonization patterns of a New England rocky intertidal habitat. Species recorded during sampling included green algae, red algae, brown algae, barnacles, and snails. In addition to increased biodiversity, the complex habitat panels also provided valuable refuge from extreme summer heat. ☀️

Join us next week to learn about how the Living Seawalls have affected biodiversity at project sites in Boston Harbor within the first 8 months of monitoring!

We’ll hear from Jarrett Byrnes, Melba Torres Sosa, and Daniel Lopez on topics including site selection and panel designs, permitting, and what intertidal species have made a home out of the Living Seawalls in Boston Harbor 🐌

Massachusetts just doubled its coastal flood monitoring capacity.

The Stone Living Lab at @UMassBoston has installed ten new flood sensors and two wave buoys from Cape Ann to Buzzards Bay, expanding its Real-Time Monitoring Network to 22 locations across Eastern Massachusetts.

The real-time data helps residents and local leaders track flood risk during storms and high tides, with predictive modeling up to 7-10 days out — all accessible for free via public dashboards.

Backed by $200K from the Healey-Driscoll Administration, this expansion strengthens Massachusetts' broader coastal resilience strategy as sea levels continue to rise. @stonelivinglab @massgovernor @massltgov A Stone Living Lab Hohonu overland flood sensor at Long Wharf in Boston. by @stonelivinglab
