922 KG OF CANNABIS BURNED — WHILE NEPAL DEBATES LEGALIZATION. 🌿🇳🇵

A huge amount of cannabis—922 kg of weed—being destroyed by Nepal Police is more than just a headline. It raises a bigger question for society: What should Nepal’s relationship with cannabis look like in the future?

Nepal has a long and complicated history with cannabis. For generations, the plant has existed within our culture, traditions, agriculture, and rural communities. Yet today, possession, cultivation, and trade remain subject to strict legal restrictions, while discussions around possible legalization, regulation, medical use, and economic opportunities continue.

This is where the conversation needs to become more mature.

Legalization does not mean “everyone should smoke.”
And criminalization does not automatically mean the problem disappears.

If Nepal ever chooses to legalize or regulate cannabis, the focus should be on responsible regulation, public health, education, age restrictions, quality control, taxation, prevention of impaired driving, and protecting young people.

At the same time, we should not romanticize weed or ignore its risks. Cannabis can affect memory, attention, coordination, motivation, and mental health, particularly when use begins at a young age or becomes frequent. Some people may develop problematic use or dependence. Driving or operating machinery while impaired can put other people at serious risk.

So the real discussion shouldn't be:

“Weed is good” vs. “Weed is bad.”

It should be:

“What policy is safest, fairest, and most beneficial for Nepal?”

If cannabis remains illegal, we should ask whether enforcement, prevention, and rehabilitation are actually reducing harm.

If cannabis is legalized, we must ask how Nepal can prevent commercialization from encouraging excessive use, especially among young people.

And if cannabis is used for medicine or industrial purposes, we should build systems that ensure research, quality, regulation, and accountability.

The destruction of 922 kg of cannabis may be the end of one enforcement operation, but it should also be an opportunity to start a much bigger national conversation.
