This is Stone Street (@stonestreetnyc) — one of the oldest streets in New York City, and the very first to be paved with stone, way back in the 1600s when this was still New Amsterdam!

Dutch settlers laid these cobblestones to support the growing port city, and you can still walk on that same historic ground today.

In the 17th century, Stone Street was lined with breweries and taverns, making it a central hub for drinking and trade…. Beer was actually safer to drink than water at the time, so the area was essential to daily life. When the street was devastated by the Great Fire of 1835, along with much of Lower Manhattan, it was rebuilt in the 19th century with Federal-style and Greek Revival buildings, many of which still stand today.

Nestled in the heart of the Financial District, Stone Street is now a vibrant pedestrian-only lane lined with cozy taverns, restaurants, and beer gardens. It’s the perfect mix of old-world charm and modern New York City energy, so whether you’re into history, food, or just having a good time, Stone Street is a must-visit.
