Check out some of the cool activities our child care teams put on at our organizing events!

Our child care team is dedicated to ensuring our organizing includes the introspection of our community’s young ones! We know it’s important to offer child care so the parents in our community can be involved and offer their invaluable time and skills to our growing movement.

The child care team is compromised of care takers and educators (with additional vetted support). We’re committed to offering creative practices and co educating the young ones on our effort to stop the data center here AND EVERYWHERE!

Encampment Animikiiwadiswan (Thunderbird Nest) starts Friday, August 14th, at 3pm Central Time and will be ongoing until further notice. All are invited to join. Full details and ways to support at ProtectThePorkies.com/camp

The purpose of the camp is to show solidarity with the land, water, and lifeforms under threat from the proposed Copperwood Mine, adjacent to Lake Superior, the Porcupine Mountains, and the North Country Trail.

For those attending:

Please note, this is a remote area with no amenities. Be self sufficient and leave no trace. No drugs or alcohol are permitted. Bring your own reusable dishware. Children are welcome!

*** Carpooling is strongly encouraged. There is some space for parking in the North Country Trail parking lot at the encampment and more at the State Park. Parking alongside the road is possible, but please be aware of the roadside gulleys — park as far off the road so as not to obstruct traffic, but do not drive into the ditch! I repeat, do not drive into the ditch!

It is legal to camp on national forest land for 14 days before relocating. Tribal members may exercise Treaty rights to remain for longer. There is no set timeframe for the encampment.

The Presque Isle Scenic Area is approximately two miles north. Hand pumps for potable well water are available at the west side of the campground. Lake Superior or safe areas of the River are the best spots for bathing.

For those seeking to drive into the State Park, it is $11 for a day pass, or more for a year pass. Members of Tribal Nations may seek free entry (seasonal State Park employees are unlikely to put up a fight). You can also walk into the State Park for free by parking at the bridge.

Come with a positive attitude and respect the leadership of Native organizers. Remember at all times that we are here to oppose the mine and show solidarity with the lands, waters, and with all lifeforms, including each other. Local law enforcement, the DNR, Ottawa National Forest employees, and others are not the enemy. So be friendly!
