In 1950, Gourevitch studied at Black Mountain College, a school with an illustrious faculty list that included Willem and Elaine de Kooning, Josef Albers, and Ben Shahn. Among the student body at the time were Robert Rauschenberg, Kenneth Noland, and Cy Twombly. In 1973, Gourevitch was included in the Whitney Biennial. In 1975, she showed at the Wadsworth Atheneum in Hartford, Connecticut, as part of their Matrix series.

We are excited to join The Armory Show with a solo booth of Jacqueline Gourevitch’s (b. 1933, France) historical and recent works, following the artist's solo exhibition at Storage in 2025.

During the long rebuilding process for the World Trade Center, bringing back art and artists was a priority for the complex’s owner Silverstein Properties.

The collapse of the Twin Towers destroyed some $110 million in art in what the Art Loss Register has described as “probably the largest single art loss in history.” In addition to commissioning and purchasing art for the buildings, Silverstein Properties began to offer artists free studio space.

Jacqueline Gourevitch, now 93, was one of those artists. She has worked on unrented floors in three different buildings over several periods since 2009. But her time in the WTC actually began in September 2000, when she participated in Lower Manhattan Cultural Council’s artist residency in the North Tower. Her term on the 91st floor ended in the spring of 2001, just six months before the 9/11 attacks that claimed the lives of 2,977 victims, including one LMCC artist, Michael Rolando Richards.

Jacqueline Gourevitch’s Paintings: 1965-2018 will be closing Saturday, August 2, 2025.

Gourevitch’s works are represented in over 20 institutional collections. "Cloud Painting #88, Nike" in The Menil Collection in Houston, TX was made in response to the "Notations" series, a set of 11 works in the collection of The Wadsworth Atheneum. "Cloud Painting #88, Nike" was also influenced by the Parthenon Niké following Gourevitch’s time spent in Greece. "Notations #7A" is currently showcased in our exhibition.

"Cloud Painting #70", which was also placed in The Menil Collection, was painted a year after "Cloud Painting #60, Homage to Mondrian’s Red Cloud", currently on view at Storage.
