In loving memory of David ‘Dickie’ Groenteman

Words will never quite be able to capture the impact of a human whose life stretched beyond a century and touched the hearts of thousands across the world.

Dick, you were a lover, a legend, a father, a fighter, an ice skater, a survivor, a husband, a hero, a cabbie, a coach, a grandfather, a game-changer - and to me - a great friend.

You were tough but tender, honest and cheeky, humble and passionate.

Through the most horrific hardships, where so many others would have given up, you kept going.

When faced with great loss you found even greater strength, forging a life that would change the course of countless others, myself included, and inspire us all.

We will all be eternally grateful for having been blessed to share in, and bear witness to, the remarkable journey that was your life story.

While this Dutchman may have taken his final flight, your legacy will soar for centuries to come.

We love you Dick and I’m sure if you could have the last word - your message to us all would be to continue loving each other.

In your memory, we will. ❤️ by @storiestoldau

Day 14 & 15: The Flying Dutchman Documentary 🏒
Over the last couple of days we’ve been exploring Belgium locations that are key to Dickie’s story. Antwerp is where his father Elias lived and was arrested. Blankenberge is where the Groentemans would spend their summer holidays together before the war and where the family business Elias founded still runs today. by @storiestoldau
