I’ve been papercrafting for years, but when it comes to painting and mixed media, I’m still figuring things out.

This page was one big experiment with paint, acrylic ink, texture and foam stamps I’d made myself.

And I freaking loved making it!

There are things I’d do differently now, but that’s kind of the point, isn’t it? We learn by playing, experimenting and occasionally making an absolute mess (seriously, the mess is the best part IMO!)

I think sometimes we forget that we’re allowed to make things simply because we enjoy making them. I know I do (😩).

They don’t have to be beautiful. They don’t have to look like the gorgeous journals we see all over Instagram. And we definitely don’t have to know what we’re doing before we start.

If you’ve been wanting to try art journaling but keep thinking you’re not creative enough, I want to encourage you, you are creative enough!! And anyway, making art is really just about making joy ✨

Calling all Aussie junk journallers & collage peeps!! These books are all from K-mart and range from $12 - $19. Great for the budget, which can we all just agree is a bit 😳 atm.

I love to cut magazines up for my journals and collages, and these books just give me a wider range of images to work with. Highly recommend. And I just checked, they’re all still available.

Designing new papers and ephemera this week for a new junk journal collection. Loving the combo of bright colour + vintage grunge 😍 I’m also creating a junk journal using the papers from my Joy Lives Here book I recently released. ANDDDDD I’m taking my writing skills and using them to create some little poems and word fragments that we can add to our journals! I might be recovering from my writing burnout which has slowed my writing and publishing down this year (😭) but I figured why not try to write for my journal designs! Really enjoying this mix of my two creative worlds ❤️

I’m so happy that I found my way back to art journaling last year. Back in the early 2000’s I owned a scrapbooking store for seven years and loved mixed media art. Then I began publishing romance novels in 2013 and writing & publishing consumed every minute of my life for over a decade. Burnout led me back to art last year. I hate that I burned out and crashed so hard but I LOVE that my days are now filled with art ❤️

Playing in an old book I rescued from landfill that I’m adding to my collection of art journals. I don’t truly love the flower I made but part of my creative journey this year is not expecting perfection, so I ran with it. Goodness, why are we so critical of our own art? I will sit and watch YouTube videos and think what the person is making is BEAUTIFUL, yet I know if I made it, I’d find things to be critical of 🙄

Here’s to celebrating our own art just as much as we celebrate everyone else’s 🙌

The strips of paper are from my new book, Joy Lives Here, a collection of papers I designed! You can use them in your junk journals, art journals, scrapbooks, cardmaking and mixed media art. It’s available from Amazon and also as a printable download from my store.

I published a new book this week!!

(And if you’re not a crafter, don’t fear, I’m still writing & publishing my romance books!! This is a side quest 😊)

It’s a book I’m super proud of because I had to learn a shitload of new skills so I could take my idea and design it into reality. And let me tell you, when your brain is 50 years old and going through perimenopause & hashimotos & fibro brain fog all at once... the ability to have an idea on Monday, remember what the hell it was on Tuesday, act on it Wednesday, and still know where you’re going by Thursday is hard, let alone being able to teach yourself new stuff and remember it a day, week, month later 🤯

This is a book filled with papers you can use for junk journaling, collage, scrapbooking, mixed media art, cardmaking and anything else you can think of.

I worked in the craft industry before I began publishing books. I used to teach scrapbooking. Reading was always my first love; papercraft, my second. 2026 has been the year of coming home to craft for me ❤️ And of discovering a deep love of art actually.

This book is just the beginning! I’ve designed a few collections over the course of this year, and have been conceptualising craft classes I’ll create, so there’s a lot in the works, and I’m so excited for all of it.

This book is available at Amazon. If you prefer to print your own papers, there’s a printable version on my new website: stormgirlstudio.com

Currently in love with this colour palette 🩵💚🤎

This morning’s 30 minutes of joy at my art table.

Converting my dining table to my art table and then turning my large open dining room space into my art studio is the best thing I’ve done for myself this year.

It means I can take tiny breaks from work throughout my days and spend five minutes making marks or adding watercolours to a page or glueing paper into my journal.

The joy I get every time I walk past my table 😍

The other wonderful thing I’ve done this year is establish a morning art ritual. Even if it’s just two minutes looking at what I made the day before and adding something to it, this time I give myself every day is a gift to my soul.

I went through such a low time when my daughter moved out and then moved states away from me. I loved seeing her spread her wings but I was so lost for a long while there. Turning my home into my art sanctuary has helped me move through this period in ways I could never have imagined.

Art truly is soul food ❤️ by @stormgirlstudio

This used to be my dining room. A massive ten seater table… just for me. And I either eat meals outside or on the couch. And I rarely have people over for a meal… so, I turned it into my art studio and I’m not sure I’ve ever been happier.

I give no fucks that it’s a hot mess. Or that there’s random pieces of paper on the floor. Life is for living, not for trying to be perfect all the damn time. So I say live. Make art. Embrace mess. Be a hot fucking mess and find joy in it💃🎨🙌

Oh how I love some grungy texture in my art journals 🖤 Playing with gesso, plaster of paris, fabric, coffee, rust dye I made and watercolours this morning. Oh and some scribble drawing which is one of my new addictions!
