There is still a little month or so to visit the All the fires come alive exhibition at the @statelibrary.archives.tas .

Here i go writing quite a chunk about that rather small bottle in the snake oil series i made for it.

I created new pieces for All the fires come alive after researching newspaper archives between the period of the 1830’s to the 1870’s.

I was interested in looking for medecines, potions, lotions and cures advertised toward women during that time period.

I concentrated my research on The Advertiser (Hobart) and The Courier Hobart, as I was looking for products of the time as well as the advertising illustrations attached to them.

What I determined rather quickly is that no product listed on the medicine column of the newspapers was directed specifically toward the female public.

Most of the remedies, more often than not proclames as "at once cure all“, as the “the Norton's pills”, the Moffat’s vegetable life Medecines or “The cordial Balm of Syriacum”, were not blatantly excluding women as the patient, but were aimed predominantly to cure the many venereal diseases or erectile dysfunctions of men.

My researches led to the most advertised book of medicine in those local newspapers at the time: “The silent friend: a medical work, on the disorders produced by the dangerous effects of onanism. by author L. Perry, first published in England in 1847.

Onanism is a fancy name for masturbation aka coitus interruptus.

Richly illustrated by fine reproduced engravings of all kind of sick penises, the extensive chapitres are filled with moral recommendations and practical tricks to not get it looking like a pickle, or what to do about it when it finally does.
Women are only mentioned within the last chapitres of the book as the receptacles of the intercourse and the cause of the infection. But never as the patient or reader themselves.

That prompted the making of the bottle above, part of the snake oil series.
I named it : "The member solution, If you stick it itch it".

▶︎Prepare for the Plunge
Saturday 12 September, 10.30am-12.30pm
Foyer, Contemporary Art Tasmania, 27 Tasma St, North Hobart

Join artists Julia Drouhin and Edith Perrenot to help create a collaborative embroidery work inspired by their ongoing project Prepare for the Plunge, which explores the act of swimming and floating as survival skills within our time of a changing climate and rising sea levels.

Together participants will embroider rubbish items found in the oceans onto a roll of tulle, and make aquarian masks out of upcycled fabric and trinkets. This workshop encourages participants to consider their own roles within the climate crisis through humour, creativity and discussion.

Everyone is welcome to contribute at their own pace, and no experience is needed. All materials are provided, but participants are welcome to bring any special fabrics or items they would like to use for their masks.

Accessibility: The space is mobility accessible. Blunt needles will be provided for the embroidery. The workshop facilitators can assist with any fine motor tasks if needed. Prepare for the Plunge was originally performed in 2025 as an emergency drill in an abandoned swimming pool, supported by Performing Lines and a Poatina Arts residency, supported through Arts Tasmania.

The Weedy Sea Dragon lantern puppet was a highlight in this year's Light Parade.

Lightwave Festival commissioned Hobart based puppeteer, Greta Jean to design and construct this complex and beautiful puppet.

Greta was supported by Édith Perrenot, creative maker & artist and Joseph Shrimpton lighting tech.

Greta & Édith hosted a lantern puppet making workshop in the lead-in to Lightwave Festival. The Weedy Sea Dragon was accompanied by shrimp, jelly fish and nudibranch lantern puppets during the Light Parade. Huge shout out to Nina & Tully & family!

Last week to see my exhibition
Malice, Tribology or the Joy of shooting back commissioned by @devonportregionalgallery

On Saturday the 16 from 10 am to 12am, I'll will be hosting a free workshop there.
