What if school lunches didn’t come with piles of disposable trays and packaging? 🍎♻️ At Emeryville Elementary School, @centerforenvironmentalhealth helped launch a reusable lunch program using stainless steel trays, keeping more than 50,000 disposable items out of landfills each year while reducing students’ exposure to harmful chemicals often found in single-use foodware. BREAKING: DEMONSTRATIONS AT 22 @STARBUCKS STORES ACROSS 11 STATES CALL ON COFFEE GIANT TO STOP LYING ABOUT PLASTICS RECYCLING The demonstrations in Massachusetts, New York, Arizona, Pennsylvania, New Hampshire, Vermont, California, Illinois, Colorado, Washington and Texas are part of a Starbucks Week of Action urging the company to stop telling customers that its single-use plastic cold cups are “widely recyclable,” after a nationwide tracking investigation by Beyond Plastics could not confirm a single cup being recycled. Beyond Plastics, its partners, and demonstrators nationwide are calling on Starbucks to: -Stop portraying its single-use plastic cold cups as “widely recyclable” when the company cannot demonstrate that the cups are actually being recycled at scale. -Remove images and messaging that may lead customers to believe Starbucks plastic cups placed in store recycling bins will be recycled. -Honor existing Starbucks policy of providing reusable cups for beverages consumed inside the store. -Replace plastic cups for their cold drinks with fiber-based cups. “Customers who carefully put their Starbucks cup into a recycling bin with an image of a plastic cold cup on it reasonably expect it to be recycled,” said @judith_enck, president of Beyond Plastics and a former EPA regional administrator, who plans to join the demonstration at an Albany, NY, store Saturday. “Our investigation found something very different. Not one of the cups we successfully tracked was confirmed recycled. Starbucks needs to stop misleading customers about plastic recycling and focus instead on reducing single-use plastic and expanding reusable and plastic-free alternatives.” #Starbucks #plastics by @storyofstuff

How almost burning out has forced my hand.. I don’t want this to be a poor me type of post but summer has been a lot. I’ve run 35 events (mix of beach clean ups and workshops) across the South East, South West and North East England. I felt broken at times and had multiple points of feeling it was all too much. But at least it’s got me to this point where something has to change, & I’ve told myself I physically cannot have another Summer like this one again. No change, No more Washed Up. I do know I’m more important than this business but it’s funny how when you’re In it, you’re in it & it’s so hard to think straight… The PLA @londonportauth who are the custodians of the River Thames recently called me “their super star of the Thames” and I had tears in my eyes when I told them I was close to packing it all in. But after a few weeks off the other option was seriously exploring whether this was could be more than just me and take the leap I’ve been scared to do for so long and try & grow what I do. I’m now back & focusing all my energy on growing a lovely army of Washed Up leaders who I will train & pay to run events. I’ve no idea how this is going to work really but I’ve got a brilliant new mentor from RBC who’s helped other social enterprises In similar ish boats & feel scared / determined to see where this can go. I wish I could have got to this point without breaking myself but it’s funny how sometimes this sort of things forces your hand 🤷‍♀️ This summer I’ve run 35 events across the South East, South West and North East England A mix of beach clean ups & workshops across the UK with brands, banks, law firms, charities, schools & several universities. Of course I’m pleased my mission has been growing wider & wider but it’s also taken a real toll on my body. I’ve travelled around with massive kit bags on tubes, trains & busses, stayed in random hotels & friends beds.. & however tired I was I always turned up with as much energy as I could muster. I’ve run them all on my own & at times it’s been exhausting. I had to cancel one event because my feet were so sore. I felt terrible letting the group down. The cards also completely took a ba taken in River Thames by @storyofstuff

Today is #WorldCleanupDay! 🌎🧹 Cleaning up our communities matters, but we can’t clean our way out of a system that keeps creating more waste. We need to stop pollution at the source through reuse, less single-use stuff, and more accountability from companies. by @storyofstuff

There’s no such thing as “liquid soap”. Soap - the stuff that cleans you - is a solid. Which is why it was always sold that way. Once plastic came along and made it easy to package liquids, companies realized they could dilute a tiny bit of soap in a whole lot of water (with some chemicals to keep it there), call it “liquid soap” and charge us the same amount of money for just a fraction of the stuff that does the job. So if you want to save a lot of money (who doesn’t these days?), stop paying for water (and plastic) and get your soap by the bar. And not just for the bath or your hands, either: even major skin care brands like Cerave sell solid bar versions of their most popular facial cleansers: Exactly the same ingredients, doing the same job and costing about the same as the “liquid”, but lasting months and months longer. And as a bonus - bars take up much less space, AND there’s no plastic going into landfills. So ditch the “liquid” and head to the bar - save money AND the planet. by @storyofstuff
