I’m Alex, the guy behind Straight To Hell Cactus!

I didn’t set out to start a business; I just got obsessed with growing cactus. One plant turned into a collection, I converted my old smoker into a seed germination cabinet, and somewhere along the way I realized I wanted to build something around it.

These days I’m focused on growing Trichocereus and other interesting cacti, learning everything I can, and sharing the process online. It’s been pretty wild watching millions of people connect with something as niche as cactus, but that’s been the best part: seeing more people get excited about growing.

Straight To Hell Cactus is still growing, just like the plants. My goal is simple: grow great cactus, keep learning, and build a community of people who appreciate these incredible plants as much as I do.

Grafting variegated trichocereus seedling, Oscar x Macrogonus, to pereskiopsis.
I’ve been experimenting using rose stem hydrators as humidity chambers for micro-grafts and they’ve been working well. These albino seedlings struggle to survive. By keeping the pereskiopsis long, I’m hoping to force some energy into the scion.

Get bugs to kill your bugs!
I moved everything into the tent for winter and turned loose 5,000 predatory mites. Phytoseiulus persimilis, 1,000 of them, for two-spotted spider mites. Shake them right onto the tips of the cactus. Amblyseius swirskii, 4,000 in hanging boxes all over the tent and they crawl around on their own.
Beneficial nematodes next week.

Unbanding the Variegated Ogun grafts. Stoked on the butt graft. Smashed the crap out of the slab grafts. But I think [hope] they’ll pull through.

Cutting up my variegated Ogun. Rarest plant I own. I’m chopping it into pieces. Slab grafts on PC, now we wait.

Feeding the babies. Bottom water with fertilizer, then back in the smoker. Full tour of that thing soon.

Variegated Ogun. Same graft, two pups, two completely different expressions. Someday there will be more of these.

Show me your ugliest grafts. Drop a photo, I know I’m not the only one.
Here’s mine. Copiapoa cinerea, and it’s rough. It rotted, I carved the rot out, it healed. Then the rootstock split wide open. Healed that too, somehow. Honestly no idea how this thing is still alive. by @straighttohellcactus
