A project to represent the likeness of strangers, that no matter how unalike we may seem, we can still find connection through our differences.

Get to know the project (a little)...

I began my MA with only one goal in mind: to create something that would bring people together. While I had no idea how to accomplish this, I was lucky enough to have a time for reflection.

As an international student, I often wonder “what reminds me of home, and why?” This project began with one question I often asked myself, and slowly grew into a project to represent the likeness of strangers.
That even through our differences we can often find similarities.

While my MA is nearly over, I still see a big future for this project.

Now I ask myself, what’s next?

The STRANGERS to STRANGERS project continues to encourage connections between strangers ⭐️

By asking questions for the public to anonymously answer, StoS uses these responses to create physical and digital outcomes likes books, zines and tapestries in an effort to demonstrate that no matter how unalike we may seem, we can still find connections through our differences.

More to come…

When I started my MA in Fine Art, I had no idea what I wanted to make. All I knew was that I wanted to facilitate spaces for community, vulnerability and safety.

As someone who struggles to be vulnerable, I started by pushing my boundaries and being more honest with myself. I attempted to use my psychedelic art practice as a bridge for conversation, but it was not working as viewers were more interested in my meanings rather than developing and sharing their own. After finding inspiration in artists and advocates like Suzanne Lacy, Yoko Ono, Candy Chang and Hunter Prosper, I began asking questions for the public to anonymously answer. I began connecting the responses through similar words, themes and concepts, and created books and zines in an effort to demonstrate our intrinsic connections. This then inspired tapestries.

The books and zines were made by the public for the public, and are therefore available for free using the link in the bio.

The tapestries were art made in response to the public.

This project is just getting started.

The completed tapestry!

Every aspect of this tapestry was inspired by the anonymous responses of the public to three different questions about their lives. Each question evoked recurring themes and concepts, many of which can be found in this tapestry.

Questions were as follows:
Yellow (top): “Joy for me is…”
Blue (middle): “What brings you comfort, and why?”
Green (bottom): “What reminds you of home, and why?”

Stages of tapestry production are as follows:
1. Collecting anonymous responses to questions and determining common themes and concepts.
2. Sketching a rough draft of what each tapestry will look like.
3. Uploading the rough draft onto Wilcom (embroidery software), and designing each stitch and pattern.
4. Determining the colours, fabric and thread of each tapestry.
5. Using the industrial embroidery machine to stitch the designs.
6. Using a sewing machine to sew the seams.
7. Hand stitching beads and hooks.

While we are all individual, we can still find similarities through our differences.

… gives me hope.

Sat on a plinth in the middle of UWE Bristol’s MA Degree Show, was a question for the curious to anonymously answer, “… gives me hope.”. A total of 111 responses were collected. This was part of a greater project, @strangerstostrangersproject, a project to represent the likeness of strangers.

After de-installing the work, my family and I took some time to read each response, allowing us to reflect on our hope.

What gives you hope?

I displayed my ongoing project, @strangerstostrangersproject , a project I have been pursuing during my Master of Fine Arts, in an effort to understand and demonstrate the likeness of a strangers. It went amazingly! Thank you to everyone who came and to all those who have and who continue to support me during this project.
