Inside the new studio of Franz Stein (@stranzfein), the floor reads almost like a blueprint of his practice. Layers of color, traces of past works, and shelves lined with spray cans, crayons, and acrylics reveal a process built on accumulation and chance.

For Stein, painting begins with pouring diluted remnants of paint onto the canvas—an intuitive gesture that allows gravity and flow to guide the first image. The surface is then washed in white, sometimes repeatedly, until earlier colors pulse through the uneven ground.

From this shifting base, Stein adds signs, loops, and dots in chalk, spray paint, and acrylic—gestures that move across the surface like fleeting melodies.

#WASMITKUNST: In der neuen Folge von WAS MIT KUNST spreche ich mit dem Maler Franz Stein (@stranzfein), dessen Werk sich zwischen Leinwand und Raum, Fläche und Textur bewegt – und der mit seiner ersten Ausstellung SUNLIT LOVE bei KÖNIG TELEGRAPHENAMT (@koeniggalerie) eine neue Dimension seiner Kunst präsentiert.

Franz Stein, ursprünglich über den Umweg der Mittelschule zur Akademie gelangt, erzählt, wie er durch Materialknappheit während der Pandemie zu einer radikal neuen Bildsprache fand – von Öl zu Acryl, vom Gegenständlichen zur Abstraktion. Heute entstehen seine Werke intuitiv, ohne Skizzen, in einem freien, gestischen Malprozess, bei dem sich flächige Malerei in räumliche Bildwelten verwandelt.

Im Zentrum des Gesprächs steht sein monumentaler, 55 Quadratmeter großer Teppich, den er in aufwändiger Handarbeit nach seinen Skizzen tuften ließ – ein Sprung vom Bild zum Raum, vom Visuellen zum Haptischen. Der Teppich ist Landschaft, Bildfläche und begehbares Kunstwerk zugleich.

Franz Stein spricht über die physische Erfahrung von Kunst, über den Stellenwert von Ehrgeiz in der Malerei und darüber, warum für ihn Produktivität im Atelier essenziell ist – und weshalb er bewusst auf Freizeit verzichtet, um ganz im Tun aufzugehen.

Eine Folge über die Suche nach einer eigenen Sprache, über das Arbeiten mit und gegen Material, und über die Transformation von Bildwelten in Raumwahrnehmung. Und über die Frage: Wie viel Intensität kann ein einzelner Pinselstrich – oder ein getufteter Faden – transportieren?

Reduction doesn’t make things simpler; it makes them more precise. In this short interview, artist Franz Stein (@stranzfein) explains how reducing a painting to its essentials is not about showing less, but about finding the perfect balance between presence and absence. By pushing himself to strip his work down as much as possible, Stein creates space for viewers to explore it on their own terms and form their own emotional connections with it. At the same time, he reflects on the role of his titles and how they might gently guide, influence or complicate the open process of interpretation.
