“Hi, are you walking to the same event? I’m a little lost, could I tag along?”

“I’m new to this community—what brought you here, if you don’t mind me asking?”

“I really enjoy talking with you— I hope we can do this again sometime?”

Making friends as an adult doesn’t need to be complicated. Believe it or not, these moments are from the past 12 weeks(I moved to Chicago this summer).

I’ve started over so many times in my life. New career paths, new cities, new faces. It’s just a matter of time before I make connections because if there’s one thing I’m going to do, I’m gonna yap. 🙂

But being a yapper is a superpower and a curse. Sometimes I hear myself talking too much in a conversation and realize I’ve overshared and in a blind panic I exit stage left as soon as f*cking possible.

Other times,
I make a new friend. 🥹

A couple months back, I moved to Chicago from Houston. Some days before that, several close friends came together to give me the sweetest surprise going away gathering. 🤎

It took a lot of effort to not burst into tears at random points throughout the night— all of these people know how much of a crybaby I can be(especially happy tears). That’s why the banner in the back saying “BRB CRYING” was extra funny to me 😂.

But genuinely, I will never forget how beautiful it was to see so many people I love in one space before I left. Do y’all know that I still read all of your thoughtful letters on my hardest days? 💌 They’re the best reminder that I’m never alone. The Leela Pantry is back open at Native Coffee(1712 W Dallas St, Houston, TX). You can find free hygiene items, diapers, pain relievers, socks, and non perishable food items(nuts, tuna with crackers, soup, fruit pouches, etc). Take what you need and give what you can. 🌻

I named the community pantry after my aunt Leela, who passed away at an early age from a rare neurodegenerative disease. She was always laughing, always extending kindness to everyone around her. 💛 So incredibly grateful to @tori_cella for painting these beautiful sunflowers on this project—they were her favorite. 🌻 taken in Native Coffee by @strawberrytooth_

New Community Pantry Alert! Located at 1712 W Dallas St on the patio of Native Coffee. Initial stock includes free non-perishables, hygiene products, diapers, and pain relievers. To Princess Bianca, I love you so much bb. I’m so happy I got to celebrate your birthday last month. You’re killing it this year girl, and it’s only March. 😮‍💨 Watching you chase your ambitions always lights a fire underneath me, especially when I need it most. And I always cherish texts and audio messages from you. Celebrated @themixyintrovert ‘s birthday on International Women’s Day. Which is so fitting—this is easily one of the most ambitious, empathetic, honest, courageous, joyful women I’ve had the pleasure of calling a friend.
