Absolutely incredible chat with my guy @strengthcoachrob on the podcast today!
Rob may have the title of strength coach, but I really appreciate his unique approach to movement problem solving and skill acquisition with athletes. Ultimately, I feel that’s the holy grail many of us are searching for… how can we take skills from the weight room and transfer them into game situations and on field performance?
Rob and I dive into motor learning and skill acquisition on this episode of the Braun Performance & Rehab Podcast. I’ve learned a lot from my conversations with Rob & I’m thankful we were able to put this episode together & share some of that with you!
Rob also hosts his own podcast, Hot takes performance, which I highly recommend checking out.
You can find this episode of the Braun Performance & Rehab podcast on all platforms including Spotify, iTunes, YouTube and more.
Episodes like this are powered by @isophit & @oro.muscles - Isophit is my go to for everything relating to isometric training, and Oro is the most effective tool I’ve used for assessing muscular activation and deficits.

As part of our prep work for rotational capacity we place a great emphasis on deceleration. Producing and expressing force at elite levels must be coupled with learning how to displace that force or create cocontractions to stabilize the force being produced. Tissues must also be trained at contraction rates and speeds that mimic the demands of sport. Nothing is going to compare to swinging a bat, but the elements of overload in these tissues will assist the lack of task specific specificity. This activity also involves elements of perception action coupling, timing, focus of attention and intention, as well as being a fun way to change up your tissue prep work. Here is a great example of a SPE/SDE for rotational sport athletes from @strengthcoachrob

This does not need to be the entirety of this athletes training. It certainly belongs in her workout.

Where?

That is up to you based on:
-Logistics of facility/staff
-Training age
-Time of season
-etc...

Coaches, especially younger ones, ask me for advice all the time. How would you solve this problem? What are your favorite exercises for this? What would you do in this scenario? I’m always glad to help.

But the coaches I’ve seen grow the fastest don’t just bring me the question. They bring their answer too. They’ve already thought it through, maybe even tested it, and they want to compare notes.

That’s the difference. When you work through the problem first, my advice adds to what you learned instead of replacing it.

We design problems for our athletes to solve. Give yourself the same opportunity.

What’s a problem you figured out on your own that taught you more than any advice could? 👇

Most people have never truly experienced a psychologically safe environment. In sports especially, traditional hierarchies and power dynamics make it the exception, not the norm.

Psychological safety is what makes honesty, learning, and challenge possible. Belong. Grow. Contribute. Challenge. Each stage builds on the one before it.

And it can’t be built by one or two people holding everyone else accountable. Coaches, athletes, and staff all have to actively engage to create it. Everyone owns the environment.

Which stage do you think is the hardest to earn? Let’s talk about it in the comments.

Huge thank you to Kasey Crider for introducing me to this framework. It has changed me as a coach and as a person.

Communication is the foundation of every high-performing environment. Here are the boundaries that protect it.

Respond to every message. Treat clarifying questions as feedback. Answer now or give a timeline. Be direct about what you need.

Simple? Yes. Common? Not as much as it should be.

What would you add? Let’s build the list together in the comments.

Concentric → Eccentric within the same set.

First half of reps: controlled concentric (3+ sec).
Second half: controlled eccentric (3+ sec).

Could the order of contractions be another programming variable?

Where I think this has the most carryover:

Return-to-play / late-stage rehab - force production, and deceleration control in one set, with the eccentric-focus reps happening under some accumulated fatigue.

Acclimation phases - rebuilding tissue tolerance and technical positions under control before intensity ramps back up

You can also progress the concentric:eccentric ratio across a block. Start 5:5 → shift toward 3:7 as it progresses. For healthy, performance-focused athletes that shift can move fairly quickly. For rehab work, let tissue tolerance and symptom response set the pace instead of the calendar.

What adaptations do you think we’d see? What phase would you try this in?

The “Nelson Method” if I had to give this a name. Which combines hip internal rotation with thoracic rotation. I use this a way to help open up the hips and the t-spine before either isometric, active mobilization, stability or loaded movements. #strengthandconditioning #hipmobility #baseballtraining #goodhittin #sportsperformancetraining taken in Washington Nationals Baseball by @strengthcoachrob

Partner Assisted T-Spine Rotation. I like the stability ball since it allows for a challenge in stabilizing the arm on the ball while exploring the relationship with that plant arm and the torso rotating across which I think is often overlooked in t-spine rotation. I think usually people just think about the movement of the trunk and not how the shoulder is challenged to both enable and stabilize this rotation. Great for isolating range in the upper half of rotation while also providing a bit of a transition into the limbo/pelvic region as well. #strengthandconditioning #sportsperformancetraining #baseballtraining taken in Washington Nationals Baseball by @strengthcoachrob

Similar to Rotation 101 we are looking at the relationship of the hips and the thoracic spine during rotation. Here we have isolated the hip on the bench and are exploring the how much the trunk can rotate and how the pelvis moves during that rotation. During these movements I really like the concept of facilitating some extra range especially in ranges that can be deficient. As always pairing this movement with strengthening exercises can create a higher response from an adaptation standpoint. #strengthandconditioning #sportsperformance #baseballtraining #thoracicmobility #hipmobility taken in Washington Nationals Baseball by @strengthcoachrob

Sport-specific training should be viewed as problem solving.

Start with the sport skill itself. Identify the movement solutions your athletes consistently gravitate toward their attractors and determine whether those solutions are beneficial to performance.

Are they stable?
Do they have multiple effective solutions?
Can they adapt when the environment changes?

From there, identify the physical qualities that are required, efficient, and deficient for that specific skill through observation, analysis, and testing.

Then train those qualities from both sides of the equation:

→ Physical preparation to expand the athlete’s physical capabilities
→ Representative learning environments to expand their available movement solutions

Importantly, don’t just reinforce what the athlete already does.

Challenge their current solutions.

Create environments that encourage them to explore, adapt, and discover more effective solutions or build deeper attractor wells around solutions that are already highly effective.

Finally, return to the skill and ask the most important question:

Did the intervention actually change the athlete’s ability to solve the problem?

That is sport-specific training.

Not making exercises look like the sport.

Starting with the skill, identifying the problem, changing the constraints, and seeing whether the athlete becomes better at solving it.
