I don’t know where to start with this — it’s been a wild ride.
I’ve been coaching Sam for the last 5 years. I’ve done all of his strength and conditioning, coached him off-season and in-season through his amazing high school wrestling career. We’ve been to countless tournaments, sectionals, states, all-states, and finishing off his high school wrestling career placing 8th in the New England Championships at 157. Graduations, banquets, family parties; he helped me build a wrestling room and coach up a bunch of kids and make them into competitive wrestlers. After he graduated in 2024, we started to pursue boxing. After less than a year of training, he took his first fight in March of 2025. Ten months later, he’s a Central New England Golden Gloves champion at 165 lbs. As a coach, it’s not often that you get to experience this all with an athlete. It’s not often that you coach someone through multiple sports and have his level of success. The kid’s been by my side through it all — all the ups and downs, the turmoil, the constant narrative that I’m crazy, don’t know what I’m doing. Not having a home base, just being nomads, he’s stuck by me and trusted me throughout all of it, and there’s something to say about his character in that. Proud isn’t the word.

There’s something to say about the connection between a coach and their athletes — when they believe in you just as much as you believe in them. When they’re a person before they’re an athlete, and you care about them as a person: It’s a key leadership principle and part of the main recipe for success in any facet of life.

This hasn’t just been me though. Sam has had many coaches in his life across wrestling. And it hasn’t been just myself coaching him through boxing — it’s Travis and myself, and I couldn’t do this without him. We’ve been a team since day one, and I wouldn’t change that — he has an equal part in this.
I also wouldn’t be the coach that I am today without my coach, Coach Jeff Burger. He mentored me and taught me invaluable things that I’m eternally grateful for that I couldn’t have gotten anywhere else.

Practice has been concluded.

First and foremost, thank you to @beachmontcorner and @revere_boxing_outreach02151 for giving me this space to use for the past 2 years to teach another discipline outside of boxing. Without them I would never have been able to do this.

Secondly thank you to @sam_lorusso3 for staying after boxing every Monday and Wednesday to help me coach these kids and pass on what he’s learnt across his years in the sport. As top 8 in New England at 157, he had a lot of valuable input. Sam has been with me for the past 4 years and he’s always been quick to help when I need something. Him and his family have become an extension of my family. My goal with the kids is always giving back, and this is what it’s all about.

I love wrestling, I always will. I’ll always have some sort of involvement with the sport of wrestling.
To me wrestling is life- i owe a lot of my life to wrestling and Muay Thai. But wrestling specifically taught me more about myself than anything in life ever has.
I always tell people that the difference between a wrestler and somebody who wrestled is that a wrestler will always be a wrestler for life; it’s a mindset and way of life even long after you’ve been removed from the sport. Wrestling taught me what hard was, it taught me about grit, it showed me how far I could actually push myself day in and day out without breaking. The grueling practices, the weight cuts, getting it done with a banged up body, the grit and mental toughness it takes to become good and battle your way back when it’s seemingly impossible or just plain makes no damn sense. What true discipline is, and how there’s true strength in that.

Each and every kid that has stepped foot on these mats has improved so much in so many different ways. Some kids walked in here having never really wrestled before, and now they move like a seasoned wrestler. Experienced guys learning small details and positional adjustment. It’s always so awesome when you see a kid have an AHH-HAA! Moment where they start to get something, but what I really love is when a kid comes to me and tells me how much their outside life has improved. *continued in comments* by @strengththroughdiscipline

Wrestling practice the other morning with the boys.
Whole lot of drilling and trying to make each other better.
Worked through some concepts for mma/jiujitsu at the end.
Very fortunate to have a wicked sick team around me right now. by @strengththroughdiscipline

There will come a time when this is no more.
The mind will forever want to go, but the body will no longer be capable.
That day may be soon, but it is not now.
So I’m going to keep doing this until that day comes and I no longer have anything left to give. by @strengththroughdiscipline

The problem with the world is that we stopped making movies about karate and being wicked optimistic.
Just imagine if they still made iroc-z Camaros? Steroids were legal, being the all valley karate champion, blonde babes with knockers roamed wild, and there was no sidewalk on revere beach again. We need more training montages and hero’s defeating the commies.

Anyways… I try to live life like as if the jersey shore and a 1980s action movie full of training montages, had a baby. All I need is a sick Jerry curled mullet and the iroc-z Camaro now. by @strengththroughdiscipline

Tell me you’re a soft body without telling me you’re a soft body. Wrestling is the oldest combat sport, the 2nd oldest Olympic sport behind track and field. I love jiu jitsu but it has one of the most toxic cultures along with boxing. As someone who’s been involved in all of these sports I can say that wrestling and Muay Thai have the best cultures.

Wrestling and wrestlers are known for camaraderie, sportsmanship, elite conditioning thats unparalleled to any other sport, grit, mental toughness, and utter dominance. by @strengththroughdiscipline

I would be nothing without wrestling. This sport has given me everything I have today. I’m fortunate that I’ve always had other interests and have pursued other things along the way as well—otherwise, I’d be much more lost than I am now.

Wrestling was my gateway into strength sports. It led me into coaching. It put me in a position to work with kids and give something back. But more than that, wrestling gave me life when I had nothing else. It was always there, by my side whenever I needed it—It always had my back.

Even while doing other combat sports, I always had wrestling in my back pocket. It gave me an edge—we’re different, and everyone knows that. People can always tell you’re a wrestler, and I’m proud of that.

This sport has built connections I’ll carry forever and opened doors I never could have imagined. Some of the best people I’ve ever met came into my life through a shared love of wrestling.

The cliché that no sport teaches you more about yourself and life than wrestling does holds true. I’m not sure I would have made it through life and come out the other side the way I have if I had never wrestled. Wrestling taught me to never quit, to always go further, and that my body always has more to give. It taught me about loss and how to handle it—how to fight back when you’re down, overcome that emotion, and carry on. It made me tough, self-reliant, honest with myself, humble yet confident, without self-doubt. Sometimes you forget these things about yourself and lose sight of them, but they always seem to come back into view with a burning fire.

I love wrestling, and I’ll always be a wrestler. by @strengththroughdiscipline
