I’ve always taken photographs for fun, but at the end of the day it really is cool to see the results of your hard work and sleepless nights hung up on a wall! I had set out to ride the wood chip train one time prior to actually riding it. After underestimating the effort it would take, I ended up watching it roll off with a rail worker on the caboose blocking my attempt.

When I finally returned, I had a better plan. My friends and I made camp in the woods right next to the empty train and waited for them to begin to load the cars with chips. Seemingly right as @light.feet finally got a fire going, they began to load up. We sat patiently as they filled the front 10 cars… it didn’t take long. Once the front was full of wood chips they pulled it forward. We took this chance to run out of the woods and board the last full car. We then sat patiently as they loaded up the back 10 and attached the caboose.

The sun rose, and the train pulled out of the yard towards the first track switch. The worker on the caboose disconnected and flipped the switch back into its original position then walked to the front of the train. Somehow, he didn’t see us.

We were home free and got to enjoy the 2 hour ride into the city. To make it even better it was mid fall and the foliage did not disappoint. by @strictlysam

As my memory continues to get worse & worse I figure sharing a bit more video and behind the scenes can’t hurt. In May of 2021 I graduated college. Unsure of what I wanted in life and what was to come, my natural instinct was to run from responsibility. I took the little money I had and bought a flight out West with a good friend. We packed enough for what we thought would be a week or so riding freight trains from Seattle to Sacramento. Forest fires had other plans for us.

About 2.5 weeks after landing in Seattle we were on the tail end of a major detour around the normally simple North to South route. We’d stopped in Portland UT, Pocatello ID, and Ogden UT already with several hiccups along the way.

As we made our way through the Salt Lakes and across the border into California we heard several radio communications that eluded to delays due to high winds and increasing risk of fires along our route. Eventually, in the dead of night we woke as our train came to a stand still. Two other trains had stopped in their tracks ahead of us already. We took turns monitoring the radio until the sun rose and eventually gave up hope, our chances of leaving before we ran out of food and water were slim. With the limited service we had, we mapped the nearest civilization and decided to risk the walk through what google deemed a “snake infested” desert.

Turned out to be quite the adventure. Eventually, we made it to a gas station in the middle of nowhere. Here we met some incredibly friendly folk while we waited for a ride. I attached some photos from the experience.

The kind gentleman with the dog showed up offering to buy us a meal, not realizing that we weren’t homeless. After speaking for a while and realizing he was in a far more dire situation than us, we bought him and his dog some food as he shared that he was living out of the car after losing his job. He eventually reached into a hidden cavity of his car revealing a mason jar full of weed. He generously shared a joint with us and we departed ways.

After a while our good friend Abel picked us up from the middle of nowhere gas station. Just 2 hours later we were atop the Bidwell Bar Bridge. Crazy times. by @strictlysam
