Some artists stay with you long after you’ve seen the work. @rainajlee is one of them.

We first encountered Lee’s practice in Almost Famous at @lalomagallery —one of our favorite Los Angeles galleries. Seeing her sold-out presentation with @strollgarden at Felix Art Fair earlier this year only reinforced what has become increasingly clear: her work is resonating with collectors in a meaningful way.

Working across painting, sculpture, and ceramic installation, Lee has developed a language entirely her own. Her luminous glazes and painterly ceramic surfaces blur the boundaries between disciplines, transforming clay into something that feels remarkably close to painting. Drawing from personal memory, art history, and her Taiwanese-American heritage, her works reveal new details and emotional depth the longer you spend with them.

We’re especially drawn to the way Lee continually pushes the possibilities of ceramics. Her mastery of glaze chemistry and material experimentation allows each piece to exist somewhere between object, painting, and landscape—at once technically rigorous and deeply poetic.

And then there’s her studio. Nestled in a treehouse in Mount Washington, Los Angeles, it’s a fitting environment for an artist whose work feels equally rooted in nature, memory, and imagination.

With works already in the collection of the Harvard Art Museums and growing institutional recognition, Raina Lee is an artist we’re excited to continue following. We can’t wait to see where her practice goes next.

Lily Clark (b. 1993, Los Angeles, CA) is a Los Angeles-based artist working across a variety of materials, including stone, ceramic, and metal to shape and contain water. Through close observation and successive experimentation, she seeks to illuminate the fundamentals of fluid dynamics. Her work has been exhibited at François Ghebaly, Los Angeles; Blunk Space, Point Reyes, CA; Marta, Los Angeles; Neutra VDL Studio & Residences, Los Angeles; Walt Disney Concert Hall, Los Angeles; and Wilding Cran Gallery, Los Angeles. Taylor Kibby (b. 1992, San Francisco, CA) lives and works in Los Angeles, California. She was educated at Bard College Simon’s Rock, Massachusetts and attended culinary school at Johnson and Wales University in Rhode Island, during which she worked as a pastry chef. She graduated in 2018 with an MFA in Applied Craft and Design from Pacific Northwest College of Art and Oregon College of Art and Craft. She was a grant finalist for the Hopper Prize (2021) and has attended residencies at Anderson Ranch Arts Center, Snowmass, CO (2021), Township 10 Marshall, NC (2021) and Watershed Center for Ceramic Arts Newcastle, ME (2018). Kibby has been featured in exhibitions at Amelie du Chalard, New York and Paris; Carvahlo Park, Brooklyn; Stroll Garden, Los Angeles; the Bakersfield Museum of Art, Bakersfield, CA; Craig Krull Gallery, Los Angeles; Egg Collective, New York; and Maho Kubota, Tokyo. Stroll Garden is pleased to present “There’s a light somewhere,” a two-person exhibition of new work by Lily Clark and Taylor Kibby. The exhibition takes place at the gallery’s Beverly Boulevard location.

“There’s a light somewhere” brings together two bodies of work that require an active viewer. The viewer is asked to see the work, rather than simply look, spending time uncovering details and secrets that may reveal themselves upon closer observation. The works shift when viewed upclose, revealing optical effects and subtle movements that are not visible from afar.

Clark, known for incorporating water in various states of movement in her work, introduces mist for the first time, exploring a state between solid, liquid, and vapor. While the mist may initially appear solid, it slowly reveals itself as something far more ephemeral and responsive to the surrounding environment. Kibby’s work, featuring highly intricate bead work, reveals how parts can come together to build something larger, leveraging the give and take of the material – vintage linen, in some cases – to record a moment.

“There’s a light somewhere” asks viewers to look closely at “micro behaviors,” as Clark and Kibby refer to them, which hint at larger natural systems at play. Ultimately, both artists have to work with and surrender to the internal desires of the material they have chosen; some decisions are out of their hands and instead shaped by the material itself.
