Sherry & I recently visited the San Diego Zoo. Some people try to see all the MLB ballparks, Sherry wants to visit the best zoos. I’ve attached a short loop (15 seconds total) of 2 rare treasures hard/impossible to see in U.S. zoos: Duck-Billed Platypus (the only one beyond Australia) & Giant Panda. Hard to see the platypus even at the zoo — the one I saw in SD lives in a dark habitat & swims too fast to get a decent photo. Wikipedia has some good photos. In contrast, you’ll see a relaxed panda enjoying a snack. #platipus #panda, # SD Zoo by @strom1513

Another epic fun Kelly-oke last night! Much love for Kelly Cassidy’s birthday (early, but sincere anyway). Lots of pals, pols, & neighbors singing up a storm of karaoke inventory favorites + obscurities. Very Rogers Park. #kmcchicago by @strom1513

Restorative justice for our schools

I was pleasantly surprised to see recommendations from Chicago faith leaders supporting restorative justice (“RJ”) programs in Chicago public schools (2/5/2023 Chicago Tribune opinion column “What the faith community requires of Chicago’s mayor.” See attached.) Done properly, RJ has been effective - even in notoriously violent neighborhoods.

I have participated in bar association programs to bring RJ to 7th - 8th grade CPS neighborhood schools in South Shore and Englewood, at no cost to the schools involved. The schools involved were among those subjected to harsh criticism for standardized test scores. But the students’ intuitive grasp of RJ was amazing. When school principals supported RJ, it worked right away — until new principals abandoned it.

The op-ed urged our next mayor to establish a citywide CPS RJ program. IMHO, a top-down approach will not be embraced by skeptical administrators. Actually, CPS policies have mandated RJ at every school for several years. Despite that, I discovered the neighborhood I knew best had no RJ programs in its five elementary schools.

The energy needed to establish RJ where it is needed the most must come from parents and community leaders, school by school. by @strom1513

Years ago, when my lovely Jersey bride & I started our married life in Chicago, she had a few things to learn about local customs. As St. Patrick’s Day approached, I told her “we dye the Chicago River green.” She gave me look & said “Michael, I’m not an idiot. Chicago doesn’t dye the river green for St.Patrick’s Day.” Rolled her eyes, exit stage left. She had to see it on the news before she believed me.

I’m posting a picture of the “Shambow” at Daley Plaza. I don’t know how I’m going to explain this one to her. She’s heard of Photoshop. by @strom1513

From our recent Caribbean cruise celebrating our 40th Wedding Anniversary: photos from Cozumel & the cruise ship, & a video of zip liners at a Haitian beach. I am not on the video - I went on later that morning. Awesome view of the bay. As for the photos, awesome view of the babe. by @strom1513
