The astute dot-watcher may notice dot 118 made it back on course yesterday! Glen felt much better after a long sleep and some real food, so the guys got back on course while I helped out with the family/crew, who were still dealing with waves of the stomach bug. Now I’m waiting their arrival at the final TA, enjoying some sunshine and a book, before joining for the final stage - which looks like it will be a lot of fun with some MTB-O and ropes on the way back to Aviemore. Thanks ITERA/Durty Events Adventure Racing for a beautiful course - wish we could have raced it like we wanted but grateful we got to still experience what we could! by @strongmachinear

Not every race goes as planned. We thought we beat the worst of it pre-race with some travel snafus for Evan and fast-passing stomach bugs for Cliff and Kate. When Glen woke up race morning with the stomach bug, we hoped we could nurse him through the first few stages while it passed. He put in a heroic effort on the Stage 3 trek through the Torridon Mountains but it became clear as we started the Stage 4 bike ride to Loch Ness that we burned too many matches for him to be able to continue the ride. We hunkered down for some rest and a hot breakfast but he was too depleted, so we made the tough call to end our race and return to Aviemore.

Expedition racing takes a lot of commitment - of time, money, training, motivation, and family support. It’s hard to not get to race the race we were excited for, but a good time to regroup as a team and check our priorities.

You may see our dot revived again tomorrow as an unofficial team checking out some later stages of the race and enjoying the most of what ITERA and Scotland have to offer. But for now, it’s bedtime. by @strongmachinear

And they’re off! Twelve hours in and they are on stage 3, a 25-33km trek. Stage 1 was a 5km prologue and stage 2 a 11-20km paddle.
Shortly before boarding buses this morning we heard that Glen woke up sick, they have prepared themselves with backup plans. by @strongmachinear

Tomorrow teammates Glen, Evan, Kate, and Cliff start our 3rd ITERA in Scotland! We survived a few more than the usual pre-race trials and tribulations, but are feeling ready to race with the start gun going off Sunday at noon GMT (8am EST).

We start in Shieldaig with a quick run then a short paddle on Loch Torridon before getting into the Beinn Eighe mountains and working our way east by foot, kayak, and bike to Aviemore / race HQ. We get the second set of maps in Aviemore - we hear it’s “a cracker”!

Less than 5 days until this year’s Maine Summer Adventure Race. All of the race directors have been busy finalizing maps and getting points set. I am extremely excited for racers to see what I’ve been cooking up over the past year. This course is special.

Earlier today, @strongmachinear came off Stage A to discover that Kate’s tire wasn’t holding air. After a few false starts, the team got it going well enough to ride down to Rutland for a proper fix at a local bike shop. Kate took a minute to chat with Abby about the situation, and the broader experience of the Long Day 2. by @strongmachinear
