Strapping a lifting belt on tight does nothing by itself.

Breathe into your belly and push out against the belt. That brace is what keeps your torso stiff on a heavy squat or deadlift. Set it about one finger loose, right over your belly button, and save it for your heaviest sets, around 80% and up.

Which belt: 10mm leather with a lever or prong if you squat and deadlift. Nylon Velcro if you do CrossFit or Olympic lifts and want it on and off fast. 13mm is really for competitive powerlifters.

A 1,500 W space heater won't warm a two car garage gym.

Rule of thumb: about 10 W per sq ft if the garage is insulated, 15 W if it isn't. A 20 x 20 ft two car garage is 400 sq ft, so plan on about 4,000 W insulated or 6,000 W uninsulated. A 1,500 W plug in heater covers roughly 150 sq ft.

Our pick for most two car garages: the Comfort Zone CZ220, a 5,000 W, 240V ceiling heater with a built in thermostat. Have a licensed electrician wire any 240V circuit.

Smith machine in a 7 ft room: it can fit, barely.

The RitFit Half Smith 2.0 lists 82 inches tall. On a 3/4 inch mat in an 84 inch room, that leaves 1.25 inches to spare. Pull ups need more: makers list 4.5 to almost 12 inches above the frame. So measure your lowest beam, duct or door track, not just the ceiling.

What does a home gym actually cost?

A power rack runs about $250 to $500. Dumbbells, about $200 to $450. Add a bench and it adds up fast.

A garage strength gym lands around $620 to $1,430 all in.

What's your budget: under $500, $1,000, or more?

Measure your ceiling before you buy a power cage.
Most full cages stand 80 to 90 inches tall, and you need head room above the pull-up bar. Under 7.5 ft, get a short rack around 71 to 72 inches. Plan about 4 x 4 ft for the cage and 8 ft of width for a loaded bar.
Our pick under $500: REP PR-1100, 700 lb rated, 80.5 in tall, safeties included. Low ceiling: Titan T-2 Short at 71 in.

Trap bar or barbell: the first deadlift bar for a home gym.
Lifters pulled 8.4% more with the trap bar. The barbell loaded the hips and lower back about 8 to 9% harder at the same weight, per the study Stronger by Science summarizes.
If you own a squat rack, buy the barbell first. No rack, start with the trap bar.

Bowflex or PowerBlock: 52.5 lb or 90 lb is the real choice.
Bowflex 552 dials from 5 to 52.5 lb. PowerBlock Elite USA goes to 50 lb and expands to 90 lb with kits, with a 5 year warranty vs 2. Specs compared from the makers' own pages.

Fixed dumbbells cost about $2.32 a pound. Adjustable pairs cost about $4.96.
But one 5 to 50 lb adjustable pair replaces 10 fixed pairs, 550 lb of iron. Counted that way, the Core Home Fitness pair works out to about $0.69 per pound replaced. 36 sets compared, Oct 2026. Prices change.

A $500 home gym has no room for a barbell setup.
A rack, bar and plates alone run about $550 to $770. Our guide builds around adjustable dumbbells, a bench, a pull-up bar, a mat and bands instead, for roughly $410 to $650. Approximate ranges, Oct 2026. Prices change.

Kettlebell vs dumbbells: for most home gyms, dumbbells win 🏋️
They cover presses, rows, curls and lunges, and adjustables go up in small steps so you keep progressing. A kettlebell wins at swings: hip power and conditioning in minutes.

A 1,500W space heater won't heat a 2 car garage gym 🥶
Rule of thumb: about 10 W per sq ft. A 400 to 500 sq ft garage needs roughly 4,000 to 5,000 W, so think a hardwired 240V heater, or an infrared heater aimed at your lifting corner. Insulate the door first, and never run an unvented propane heater with the door shut.
