NOT TODAY!!!
Definitely my most exciting and harrowing meet as I skirted the line of bombing out, many a weightlifters’ worst nightmares. Funny enough warmups in the back were some of the best I have ever felt in a meet before. Really living by my catch phrase: “It doesn’t matter how you feel” for lifting, even when it feels good.

It came down to my last lift as I was called for press outs again and again for my clean and jerks, but manage to grit through and put on a show. This meet really showed me what stuff I was made and I popped off harder than I ever have before, grateful for the two lifts I fought for.

Feeling so blessed for @standard_strength_wl and the all the friends that tuned in, it reminds me of the community I have fostered in my journey of coach/athlete. Knowing that my epic battle in C session somehow managed to inspire others to pursue qualifying totals to join our team next year means the world to me. I promise to try minimizing the heart attacks for future performances.

Eternally grateful (how many eternities at this point) again for @kahluacrush for continuing to be my anchor in this weightlifting game. Team captain apologies for any induced stress. Big shoutout to my fellow budding coach @hutton.boles, your cues and feedback lighted the way for me to crawl out of the mire of missed lifts. With your technical coaching, plus getting work done in the medical tent, I have a clear idea on what to work on. I’ll be attacking my shoulder mobility with a vengeance and I’ll be filling out the rest of my weight class with all the lats.

The rest of the post consists of a collection of fun shenanigans with the growing @standard_strength_wl team. I’m so proud of all of our new and returning athletes who are committing to this weightlifting struggle. I had opportunities every single day of this event to coach and count for all of my teammates. I couldn’t have asked for a better time.

“Be careful what you wish for”
I told everyone I knew that this summer was going to be dedicated to eating, sleeping, and training. I got exactly what I wished for and it was the most mentally and physically draining summer experience I’ve ever had. Days in and out of running my body ragged and slamming my head against the barbell (metaphorically) to claw my way towards improvement.

And I improved. A little more mobility for my shoulders and back, a little more resilience in my body, and little more refining of my technique to the point I can actually enjoy watching my own lifts.

This meet was another train through (surprise) coming hot off the heels of grueling volume block. Hitting percentages I haven’t touched in weeks out on the platform, I went 4/6 and got another all time best total (consistent performance, but there goes my third lift data for @openweightlifting) Summer well spent.

We know I got shoutouts: @kahluacrush for being in corner, all of the @standard_strength_wl @standardstrength team for devoting their time to doing the most, @marvinaldensantos @pinecakeofficial for mutual platform suffering and smelling salt addictions, @roxanne2332233 and @sean.hou for double duty supporting warmups and capturing sick videos and photos for me while I’m lost in the sauce.

I say my piece every time to let people know that there is more to come. taken in Standard Strength by @strongtoine

Bar Wars 2025 (01/12)

Bodyweight: 87.4 kg
SN: 95 ✅ 99 ✅ 102 ❌
C&J: 120 ✅ 125 ✅ 130 ❌
Total: 224 kg (+5kg total PR)

Not bad for a train through, especially after having coached and counted for the 2 days of the meet. These were the heaviest openers I have ever led with. I’m getting more comfortable with bigger jumps in my warmups throughout training, which pays off in how flexible I feel with timing my warmups in chaos. I feel locked in with my game day routine, getting in the groove of weaving in and out of focus and getting amped. Pulling all of this out after exhausting my brain on counting and coaching really shows how I feel did not matter.

That said, I’m beating myself up a bit for fumbling my third attempts. Looking back at the video I see my technique for both my snatch and clean breaking down, especially jumping forward when I previously wouldn’t have. Was this in part due to switching shoes just 4 days prior in my excitement try the new TYRForce, we may never know. Nevertheless, I have a fire lit under my butt to pursue the technical efficiency in weightlifting that I know myself to be capable of.

On other note, I am extremely proud of where my jerk has gone. Now dubbed the “cleanjerk” (very much inspired by the likes Ilya and Alireza) amongst my team, my shortened transition from clean to jerk allowed me to finish the lift with aggression and confidence. As I continue to improve my mobility, I cannot wait to see how far I push the lift that I once second guessed.

I am proud to be @standardstrength coach and athlete. Especially proud of all the athletes who placed their trust in me to lead them through this meet experience as well as my fellow teammates who competed alongside me. Wholeheartedly thankful for everything @kahluacrush has done for this experience: hosting this meet for the weightlifting community, leading our team, and for continuing to push me. Big shoutouts to the wonderful assistant coaches @roxanne2332233 @aroble_ @alicemcbroom for throwing themselves into the world of counting and holding it down, as well as the
countless volunteers who support our humble community. Our team continues to grow and I plan to lead by example. taken in Standard Strength by @strongtoine

American Open Series 2 Fort Worth Meet Recap 8/31/24

Snatch 93x(PO)/93/96x(PO)
C&J: 119/123/126
 4/6 total 219 kg.
All time C&J PR and total PR

Genuinely surprised myself here. First time competing out of California, so I wasn’t sure what to expect (really liked the convention center though) Training had been going consistent, even I was still feeling a bit beat from having competed earlier this month. Told myself to have fun and support my team, to which I did and then some!

Rocky start with the snatches getting my opener called for a press out (there goes the cowboy hat). Managed to hit on my second before priming myself with high pulls for my third. Right before going out, my body finally remembered how to pull properly and I surprised myself with how well 96 felt. Unfortunately felt too good and I sent it too hard, leading to another press out. My overhead continues to be the limiting factor, which isn’t anything new. Imagining what more I can be capable of once I get my lifts locked out gets me fired up.

Came back with a vengeance for clean and jerks. Best my cleans have ever felt, which is crazy to think that 6 weeks ago I couldn’t even rack a barbell without elbow pain. Before I knew it, I smoked an all time PR at 126, on top of completing the heaviest C&J of my session!! I was still so amped that I immediately went back to the training hall and PRed my back squat too.

This trip and meet is for sure the highlight of my amateur lifting career. Flying out, competing with kindred spirits, training with teammates, getting higher level coaching and counting experience, and being the presence of physical phenoms will be imprinted in my weightlifting memory bank.

All the love and appreciation to my amazing team @standardstrength with @kahluacrush @roxanne2332233 @hutton.boles @mason_w8 @emma_weightlifting , it’s truly an honor to lift alongside you all.

Also need to shoutout all the friends who came through to spectate my Texas throwdown, especially the big boys @kdott3_ @bradchew @adali6309 for rolling up with us to support and giving us a fun time.

Money in the Bank Meet Recap 8/3/2024

Snatch: 93x(press out)/93/97
C&J: 117/121/124x
4/6 total 218kg

Not too shabby of a performance after helping count and coach all day! Still weighing in light (85.5kg BW) from sweating all day. Best meet performance by 1kg!

Since my last meet, I have seen how fundamentally resilient my body has become; this is definitely the healthiest (knock on wood heels) I have ever felt throughout a training cycle and I take great pride in my lifestyle choices that has led me to this point. I was able to hit every training session without hesitation, pushing my lifting to limits while also optimizing my recovery. I give big credit to the team and community @standardstrength for fostering an environment I always look forward to training in.

My confidence in my snatch has reached new heights with all of the technical changes I have implemented (no shortage of yelling thoracic extension at myself) allowing me to attack bigger weights more consistently. These still work to be done in terms of replicating my form —such as wasting my opener with a pressout— but I am feeling ready to keep pushing my snatches, leading to a solid snatch comp PR.

Clean and jerks on the other hand have not quite caught up. The adjustments for these lifts haven’t solidified just yet, so it’s right back mobilizing and strengthening all the things I need to get these heavy hitters going. Left the embarrassment of a clean at 124 at the end for anyone’s curiosity on why you shouldn’t overpull (Note my body is still intact)

My eternal appreciation for @kahluacrush for his skillful handling and motivation. Shoutouts to @olamide_wellington032 for helping out with my counts and getting me worked up just the right amount as well as @mendolici0us for also helping out and making sure my vintage fits were on point.

Big thank you as well to @kmh_xxmotobabe and @roxanne2332233 for helping capture my lifting moments while I was lost in the sauce!

I’m still reeling from such a momentous meet @standardstrength

Throughout this year our team has expanded and grown so much. We were able to have 16 athletes compete under (and by proxy) the Standard Strength name and I had the honor of a lifetime training, coaching, counting, and even competing with them. From youth lifters, first-timers, intermediates, masters, veterans of the sport, and even medalists and a winner of the comp, I got to experience the whole gambit and play my part in supporting them to successful performances and qualifiers across the board.

I cannot express how grateful and proud I am of all of you @kenleung @vfernandezkim @georgedeshong @cannibaleyez @roxanne2332233 @hendafrenchfry @efesozkesen @osiriz3 @loopdloop9009 @olamide_wellington032 @kr3ydot @alicemcbroom @3ebkr Coach Twan can’t wait to see more from all of you 😁

Thank you @kahluacrush for putting so much faith in me and for continuing to teach me through your own actions. I continue to be inspired by how you contribute to the weightlifting community and I hope to do my part.

Those who know me know that there’s more to come.
I need to get back to goading more people to join the weightlifting party. #snatch #cleanandjerk #weightlifting taken in Standard Strength by @strongtoine

HassleFree Spring Breakers Meet Recap 4/20

Snatch: 89/92/95
C&J: 117/120x(press out)/120
5/6 total 215kg

Debut meet as a light 89kg lifter (weighed in 84.2) and first train through meet. I have a newfound appreciation for tapering.

Planned with coach @kahluacrush to stick with conservative attempts to hit exactly what I needed to qualify for American Open 2. Thank you again for always keeping cool and keeping me anchored during these meets. I learn more every time about being both an athlete and coach from your exemplar.

Had the honor and privilege of competing alongside @dasugamonster, my day one Davis teammate, and witnessing his best meet performance yet. I’ll need to work hard to keep up. Props to @dayadayadayada for continuing to come along for all the adventures and cheering us on.

Not pictured here: @roxanne2332233 and @spicy.m3atball being some of the most enthusiastic teammates ever; loading warmup weights, grabbing water, zipping up singlets, giving polite slaps on the back, and hyping me up. Can’t forget our own team PT @ravitron1234 for checking up my shoulders and just being another strong pillar of support. I’m not sure how I could ever fully convey my gratitude.

One big shoutout to all of my teammates and athletes from @standardstrength for showing up to gas me up. I hope that my contribution of sweat and tears for their enjoyment can inspire them and others to join in on the fun and jump into competing themselves. I am proud to be a part of this.

During this last busy weekend, I had the honor of coaching a total of 7 athletes/teammates through our local meet Bar Wars 2024 @standardstrength, many of whom were competing for the first time!

All of them did amazing! We had new PRs, hyped comebacks, 6/6 performances, and American Open qualifications all throughout the weekend. I cannot state enough how proud I am of my team: tomhuang @hendafrenchfry @efesozkesen @liki408 @roxanne2332233 @mendolici0us @determined2prevail Thank you for putting your trust in me and helping me earn my coaching stripes.

Continually grateful to my own coach and mentor @kahluacrush for showing me more of the ins and outs of platform coaching. Can’t wait to step it up to national level meets one day!

And big appreciation to all the friends who came through to support, volunteer, and help out at the meet. Love my community here @standardstrength

Looooooooong overdue American Open 2 recap! Finally had some time to sit with my thoughts and process all the craziness that happened last weekend.

88x(press out)/88/91
118/122x/123x(press out)
209kg total

I got to lift on the big stage. I went through many challenges leading up to my first AO, but I gathered myself and put everything I had onto the platform. Not my best nor worst performance, but I am proud of what I pulled together.

My gratitude cannot be understated. Part of what made this meet such a memorable moment in my life was the sheer number of awesome human beings who were cheering me on. Had my team @standardstrength with @bradchew @kahluacrush @jayjmta and Matty Z holding me down in the back room while @roxanne2332233 @tagummm @dasugamonster @thickynoodles @dayadayadayada @lizleahyvb yelling at me from the stands not to bomb out on top of all the friends sending me support and love through messages and tuning into the live stream. Can a struggling weightlifter really ask for more?

I don’t think I need to mention how hungry I am for more of this. Goodbye 81kg weight class.

South Bay Open meet recap!

91/94/98x
115/120x/121x

Finally pitching in my post-meet thoughts. Went 3/6 with a 209kg total to qualify for A02!

This was both an exciting and harrowing experience: water cutting for the first time, navigating a frantic session, and feeling my thoracic spine lock up throughout the day were all part of the fun 🙃. My eternal battle with my overhead position continues...

At the heart of it all, I had the wonderful opportunity to compete alongside crazy amazing people. Sharing a platform alongside my day 1 weightlifting comrade @dasugamonster was an honor. Throwing big shouts to @thickynoodles and @dayadayadayada for being in our corner.

Got to rep @standardstrength with my coach @kahluacrush having my back and keeping me sharp in between the madness. Always appreciating the hype they bring.

On top of that, I spent the rest of the day catching up, meeting, and cheering on fellow weightlifters. The community and camaraderie are hands down the best aspect of jumping into these competitions as we all keep training away to keep improving.

Thanks @hasslefreebbc for hosting and organizing!
