At the October 1 Parish Council Meeting, President Cooper presented the proposed 2027 Operating and Capital Budgets to the Parish Council, highlighting more than $66 million in infrastructure investments while navigating significant financial challenges facing our community.

“This budget is the most challenging budget process my administration has faced since taking office in 2020,” said President Cooper. "Every budget reflects our priorities, but it also reaffirms our responsibility to the people we serve. Despite significant financial challenges, we are proposing one of the largest infrastructure investments in our parish's history while remaining focused on protecting essential services and making the best possible use of every taxpayer dollar.”

The proposed budget includes more than $66 million for roads, bridges, drainage, utilities and other capital improvements, while also focusing on protecting & strengthening infrastructure, building a more resilient parish, preparing for responsible growth and maintaining fiscal discipline.

A significant challenge facing St. Tammany Parish includes a 60% reduction affecting our public safety agencies, including the District Attorney’s Office, 22nd Judicial District Courts and Correctional Facility. The General Fund supports both Parish Government’s daily operations, as well as the state-mandated responsibilities. Current General Fund revenues are insufficient to meet those obligations, requiring difficult decisions throughout the budget development process.

President Cooper also emphasized that this administration remains “committed to working with our criminal justice partners on immediate and long-term solutions, which include the Keep St. Tammany Safe initiative, that voters will consider on December 12.”

The St. Tammany Parish Council will review and hold public meetings to gather community input and adopt the budget by the end of the year.

Cold weather is coming, but so are the chances for fires to spread!

Low humidity, strong winds and unusually dry vegetation has created favorable conditions for rapidly spreading wildfires on Saturday, October 17. As such, we are under a Red Flag Warning.

Last time we had a Red Flag Warning, there was a large wildfire near I-12 in Lacombe. Please do not burn this weekend! by @sttammany

In recognition of Pregnancy and Infant Loss Remembrance Day, the St. Tammany Parish Council has declared October as "Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month in St Tammany Parish."

Councilman Smith honored the important work of Kristi Lamarque-Bordelon and St. Tammany Health System in championing compassionate bereavement care with a proclamation during the October 2026 Council Meeting.

The Louisiana Legislature recently passed Angel’s Law, formally known as the Perinatal Bereavement Care Initiative, a landmark legislation establishing consistent standards for bereavement care for Louisiana families experiencing the loss of an infant or child to help ensure the quality of care a grieving family receives is not determined by where they live or which hospital they enter

Angel’s Law was championed by Kristi Lamarque-Bordelon, a nurse with St. Tammany Health System, who recognized an unmet need among bereaved families and worked to create meaningful and lasting change based on both her own personal experience and professional work supporting families through loss.

Angel’s Law provides that hospitals with maternity or neonatal intensive care services have access to specialized cooling devices, such as a Caring Cradle or CuddleCot, allowing families additional, unhurried time to hold, bond with, and say goodbye to their baby.

The Angel’s Law also promotes education and specialized training for healthcare personnel in compassionate communication and bereavement support, while helping connect grieving parents with counseling, support groups, and community resources. These compassionate bereavement practices are already being provided at St. Tammany Health System, demonstrating the importance of ensuring that families receive meaningful support during one of the most difficult moments of their lives. by @sttammany

Our commitment to open governance continues!

Public hearings for the proposed 2027 budget will begin on October 13, 15, 28 & 29 in the Parish Council Chambers on Koop Drive in Mandeville.

The proposed 2027 Operating and Capital Budgets includes more than $66 million in infrastructure enhancements for our roads, bridges, drainage, utilities and other capital improvements. General Fund revenues are not sufficient to fully meet state-mandated obligations, such as the District Attorney's Office, 22nd JDC and correctional facility. As a result, the proposed budget includes a 60% reduction in available funding to these public safety agencies, requiring difficult decisions in the budget development process.

Can’t make the meetings in person? Watch the meetings live or view VODs on STPG-TV, our government access channel.
