There’s something old-world about it, a continuation of the intimacy of the perfumer’s atelier, before digital scales and automated precision.

And we’re not ashamed of it: Natural raw materials are never truly identical. Harvest, season, climate, soil, distillation and ageing all leave their mark.

| HALWACHI

In the cool quiet of a traditional Bahraini halwa workshop, a halwachi works at an unhurried pace between the souq and the sea.

Precious saffron stains his fingertips before falling into the copper vessel, releasing its colour into the simmering halawa. Dried loomi and preserved lemon scent the air, whilst rose water, cardamom and Bahraini dibs unfold through its amber sweetness.

At the footsteps of the souq, the sea once met the land, along a shoreline now buried beneath the city. Waves broke against the old port, sending humid air and a fine spray of mineral salt through the narrow passages. Pearl divers returned carrying the scent of the sea upon them, brine, opened oysters and the lingering trace of hours spent beneath the water. Indian ouds drifted from neighbouring perfumers into the workshop.

As trays of halawa are set aside to cool, leather, woods, and copper settle quietly around the saffron.

This is the scent of the Bahraini halwachi. His hands, his workshop, his souq and a craft shaped over generations. A fragrance suspended between Bahrain’s sea and souq.
