🥇 GOLD WINNER
D’Light Lighting Design Award 2026

Kochi-Muziris Biennale | India 🇮🇳

We are proud to recognize studioEVM., led by Eby Vincent Mathew, with the Gold Award in Lighting Project Design for *Kochi-Muziris Biennale 2025–26* in Kochi, India.

For the Kochi-Muziris Biennale 2025–26, India’s first and South Asia’s longest-running art biennale, studioEVM. approached light as adaptable cultural infrastructure across 66 artists and 7 venues.

Responding to historic structures, changing artworks, daylight conditions, curatorial revisions, and visitor movement, the studio developed a flexible track system featuring three fixture families for diffused, directional, and focused illumination.

Adjustable fixtures, precise glare control, cinefoil shaping, gel filters, and non-invasive mounting techniques addressed the complexities of the exhibition environments. Site-sensitive light levels, specification-grade fixtures, local procurement, and strategies for reuse and minimal intervention reflected a responsible approach to lighting design.

Across spaces of varying heights, architectural lighting was combined with theatrical fixtures, using carefully selected optics, beam control, RGBW colour, and dimming to create atmospheric depth. This bespoke approach established a sensitive dialogue between light, artworks, architecture, and the visitor experience.

🥇 GOLD WINNER
D’Light Lighting Design Award 2026

25 Years of Sabyasachi | India 🇮🇳

We are proud to recognize studioEVM., led by Eby Vincent Mathew, with the Gold Award in Lighting Project Design for *25 Years of Sabyasachi* in Mumbai, India.

For 25 Years of Sabyasachi, the house’s 25th-anniversary show in Mumbai, we translated the nostalgia of old-world Calcutta into a contemporary luxury setting for a global audience. Research into North Calcutta heritage homes and archival imagery guided an Indo-European colonial lighting language of ornate chandeliers, wall lamps, and lanterns, held together by the warm glow of incandescent and halogen light.

The design used 2700K lamps, locally sourced fixtures, artisanal ageing, and layered composition across interiors, corridors, facades and streetscapes. Custom patina, surface wear, selective breakage, dimming, and timed cues transformed this grandeur into an atmosphere that felt lived-in, timeworn, and faintly eerie, while maintaining technical precision and show functionality.

Designed for a temporary event, the project considered afterlife from the start: reusable fixtures passed to production teams, while aged pieces entered secondary markets for upcycling and recycling.

A few weeks ago at the @idac_expo Mumbai 2026, talking about the ROI of good interior design in workplaces, retail and hospitality with an esteemed panel of architects and design professionals.

We explored a really exciting shift happening in our industry right now: moving past the idea that lighting is just an electrical line item, and recognising it as a core driver of value. We talked about the magic that happens when lighting designers are trusted as early partners rather than late-stage problem solvers. When we collaborate from the conceptual stage, design is intentional, and actively lowers overall costs. It means a smarter layout with fewer fixtures, lower running bills, and a space that truly maximises the client's investment from day one.

It was a deeply fulfilling conversation that reminded me why I love doing what I do in the first place. Good design is not supposed to be a luxury or an afterthought. It is the very foundation of how we connect with spaces around us that we inhabit and experience.

Thank you @idac_expo @charishmalobo for inviting me to share my thoughts on behalf of @lidai_2020 . by @studio.evm

In November of 2025, our lighting redesign for the Mani Bhavan Gandhi Sangrahalaya Dioramas was awarded the Utkarsh Puraskar at the Lidai Lighting Awards hosted by @lidai_2020 and @foaidindia.in

Mani Bhavan is a place where history feels tangible. On the top floor are 28 dioramas that depict pivotal moments of Mahatma Gandhi’s life; scenes that have captivated visitors since 1971. But over the decades, the lighting had degraded, losing the emotional depth these stories deserve.

The challenge? How do you light a historical moment that fits inside a fragile, vintage wooden box?
1. Using 3000K LEDs and custom filters, we mimicked everything from the soft glow of a chandelier to the diffused light of an overcast sky.
2. We treated these miniatures like movie sets, using tiny spotlights and strips that deliver high-fidelity (90+ CRI) colour while staying tucked out of sight.
3. No over-complicated tech here. We developed a modular “kit of parts” with simple manual dimmers, ensuring the museum staff can easily maintain the magic for years to come.
4. Every fixture was sourced in Mumbai, keeping our carbon footprint low and the heat away from these delicate historical artifacts.

It was a delicate dance between conservation and curation, one which was choreographed with meticulous direction by @anupamsah_ of @anupamheritagelab and @ebyvm. This project showed us we don’t need a massive footprint to make a massive impact.

The makings of a monumental project like this depend on hours of intensive collaborative work between numerous people, we wanted to show you a glimpse of that effort behind the scenes. by @studio.evm

What goes behind the making of an award-winning project?

Principal Lighting Designer @ebyvm breaks down the lighting design process from concept to execution for The Sabyasachi 25 Years Show.

While we are one cog in the wheel, this wouldn’t have been possible without the brilliance of each and every team working together to bring this show to realisation.

The nostalgia of old-world Calcutta recreated for Sabyasachi The 25 Years Show, a modern fashion show for a global audience.

Our lighting design was rigorously informed by historical precedent, stemming from in-depth research into North Calcutta’s heritage architecture and archival imagery. We sought to authentically recapture the eclectic material harmony of the era, where acquired fixtures yielded a blended aesthetic, unified by a gentle, evocative 2700K warmth.

The installation’s three core tenets included the historically accurate colour temperature, bespoke artisanal ageing to create a genuinely timeworn patina, and a carefully layered composition across the entire venue.
