These are the first pieces in my sculpture series, Safe Passage. Through what is becoming a long path of deep spiritual exploration and processing of past/recurring trauma, these entities have been revealing themselves to me in the form of ancestral protection.

I had initially sculpted them last October. Then, they sat in a damp box through my busy holiday rush. They weren’t bisque fired until April of this year, because I could not confirm if the vision in my mind’s eye had been captured in its entirety. They were left to sit in my studio again, as I found myself in a spiral of indecision about surface decoration. I had even begun to underglaze them in a completely different color.

Whenever this happens, I usually set the item aside and ask for/await the download, no matter how long it takes.

In the midst of some deep emotional and spiritual excavation work, the download arrived, prompting me to wash off the underglaze and go in a different direction. The focus was no longer about the work being good; it was about the work being true.

At some point I’ll write about it in detail, but I’m having a full-circle moment, returning to the reason why I wanted to engage this medium in the first place. Through this process, I am meeting my makers.

STILL SIPPIN! This is the last round of sippers, probably until around the holidays. I’ve got sculptures to finish, and some fast-approaching deadlines!

This one’s for the away team! If you’ve missed out on my airbrushed Dot Mugs last time I had them in my webshop, I’ve got a few more listed, with a special one for my folks with Scorpio placements. 🙋🏾‍♀️ #deadinside 😈

This edition of airbrushed mugs have some gold luster dot detail from my very last bottle of Mayco gold luster. I can’t believe that it has been discontinued! No other luster compares! (IMO)

The last sipper is somewhat of a wildcard. It is another doodle made in @procreate, turned into a stencil. I call it the Couple Cup. Couple of friends, couple of lovers, couple of enemies… You decide. Either way, they’re having a time.

🚨More sippers for your tactile enjoyment @waterway_arts!🚨 I’ve been observing all of the ‘loose wires’ in my imagination that are driving me to create work that looks like nothing else I’ve made in the past. To honor those ‘wires’, I’ve been bringing them to fruition and putting them into the world, while trying not to overthink things. 🥲

This was a result of a doodle in @procreate, and turned into a stencil. Clearly I hadn’t thought things through until I had to place every single outline and dot in an arrangement that would fit each piece (& satisfy my brain) lollll.

The tactile bit comes in because you get not only the “rounded” feeling of the glaze edges as they melt into the underglaze, you can feel the clay texture in the unglazed masked parts. Pure satisfaction.

The universe decided to bless me with @tiptoporchard’s show-stopping peonies during the same week that I pulled these handbuilt vases out of the kiln! The surface design is a loose interpretation of a pattern that I saw on @goldenratioclayworks daughter’s cardigan that I had seen her wearing several months ago. Deep contrast is so satisfying for my brain, so I couldn’t get the pattern out of my head!

Many thanks to @tiptoporchard for your generosity, @apt.one_shop for facilitating the flower transfer, and for having an amazing sale (also very generous!) when I was there, and to @goldenratioclayworks for the inspo via your gorgeous and stylish babygirl! A few months ago, my dear friends Boyuan, @chelseairisgranger, and @katrinagoldsaito asked me to collaborate with them and create these sculptural vessels inspired by themes from The Joy of Grief, an event that we held at our friends’ bar, @subrosa.botanica.

I had sculpted two vessels for the event in February, but fell extremely ill in March with some virus that was going around, and that heralded an entirely new level of grief for me. So I made a game-time decision to start from scratch. Though risky, I timed it down to the wire and pulled these babies out of the kiln a few hours before I was scheduled to head to the event. You wanna talk about trusting the universe?? 😅

Whew! This is my first and last grid post of the year. I don’t have the fortitude to articulate the losses, but I know that I’ve earned the wins. I am love, and I am loved. Deeply! I’m growing younger, because I’m fortifying my relationship with my inner child. My wisdom is deepening, and my discernment is stronger than ever. This year, I’ve finally accepted that my light may draw power predators and energy vultures, but that does not make me anyone’s prey.

To the folks who have helped to support my art practice over the years, I have so much gratitude! Know that my work would not be in your hands (or in existence) without the unrelenting support of my spouse, my ancestors, my mom, and my chosen family. The style of my work is changing, and will continue change over the next year. You are welcome to join me on the journey.

Thank you to @msward.ceramics , @htl.ceramics , @jbkcc , and @nohocenterforthearts for inviting me to participate in your markets this year. I love it when I’m surrounded by art and artists, and I don’t take that for granted.
