In 2004, they transformed a power station into Berlin’s Berghain. In 2026, in a residential complex inspired by an African chalet in the Swiss Alps near Gstaad, they created Play. Thomas Karsten and Alexandra Erhard of @Studio.Karhard in Berlin reflect on how the approach to designing nightlife venues has changed over the past few decades: “The demand for flexibility. A space like Play must be able to transition from film nights with surround sound to intimate listening sessions, right through to full-scale club operations. The range of functions that a single venue must be able to offer has grown considerably”.

They work in places where the usual rules governing space are relaxed. Giving tangible form to intangible elements such as music, light and movement. Because, as the architects of the night say, converting a former industrial site into a club, or breathing new life into legendary dancefloors, means designing more for the body than for the eye.

Studio karhard® from Germany wins Platinum Award at IDPA International Pioneer Design Award 2026

This 94 sqm apartment was originally divided into two rooms. The initial intention to separate study, living room and bedroom failed to fit the original structure.
The designers removed the old partitions and reshaped the layout, fulfilling the demand for a shared kitchen and abundant storage.

Bedrooms and study are set as dark zones with matte black finishes, softening the boundaries between spaces.
Linoleum built-in cabinets, wall paint, furniture and leather curtains maintain a unified monochrome palette.
The guest bathroom adopts stainless steel walls and matching metal sanitary ware.
The bright master bathroom highlights a solid green marble sink, with a walk-in shower hidden behind it.

SILENCIO BERLIN

Fifteen years of Silencio, and a new chapter written in Berlin.

Set within the former Watergate, on the banks of the Spree, this pop-up has been shaped in dialogue with the city: its creative energy, its nightlife, and the singular way its nights unfold.

Architecture by @studio.karhard, sculptures and installations by @marcleschelier and lighting by @studio.raito come together to create a space for music, performance, moving image and the visual arts.

October 30 – May 30 by @studio.karhard

Studio Karhard is a Berlin-based architecture and design studio founded in 2003 by Thomas Karsten and Alexandra Erhard, behind some of the city’s most recognizable spaces: from Berghain and Panorama Bar to restaurants, medical practices, and private residences across Berlin.

We spoke with them about what makes a space meaningful, why a building’s history is part of its future, and what Berlin looked like when they first arrived.

Award‑winning Project: Glassbrick Apartment
This 94 sqm apartment originally contained two rooms. Abandoning the old compartmentalised layout, the designers reshaped the space to realise integrated study, living and bedroom zones, together with a shared kitchen and generous storage solutions.
The living‑kitchen area forms the core of the home, opening toward the balcony behind a translucent glass‑block wall.
Materials including stone, steel and glass are carefully curated, paired with thoughtful lighting that creates dramatic alternation of light and shadow.
Bright and airy living space features cream‑red‑grey speckled terrazzo flooring and pale walls. A sculptural burgundy velvet sofa curves alongside the glass‑block partition, sitting atop frosted‑steel base. The glass‑block wall glows as a luminous backdrop, shaping a relaxed lounge atmosphere.
