Forest within a Forest;

The house envelops the existing trees on site, tucking itself into the natural landscape. Conceived as a light pavilion, it traces the southern edge of the forest, meandering in and around the trees to form a gentle transitional space—guiding one from the dense forest canopy into the openness of the paddy fields.

Extending our enquiry into material and its surrounding conditions, basalt is approached through the surface it carries — the chiseling, the pitting, the tool marks and the wear left across old sculptures and temple faces across the regions of Maharashtra, each recording a point of contact between tool and stone repeated over time.

Attention is paid to how these marks extend beyond surface, indicating a stone shaped from the outside in, formed less by addition than by what has been taken from it. Weight, in this reading, is not treated as an inherent property of the material but as something arrived at through subtraction — held in whatever mass remains once material has been worked away.

These observations have informed the development of an assemblage of haptic objects -- an intuitive translation of the dialogue between material, people and land.
