The sky is painted third.

Gofun first.

Then yellow for the earth.
Then the grey for the sky.
The shore at the front comes last.

For the grey, only the tip of the brush touches the pigment, so only the finest part goes on the painting.

The coarse grain stays at the bottom of the bowl.

Each layer waits for the one before it.

Year 2, still learning to trust the order.

One shore needs three colors. 🌊

Orange, ink and green.
None of them look like a shore alone.

The ink goes into the orange first and it turns brown.

Then the green goes on top.

Before any of it touches the silk, the silk gets water.

A wide brush, left to right, then right to left, applied consistently so that the pigment can move more easily.

This is the first layer, the shore at the front of the painting.🖼️

Year 2, still learning how few colors a shore needs.

The ground goes down before the sky.

Gofun first. ⚪️
Then yellow over it for the earth. 🟡
The grey for the sky waits until the ground is down.

A wide brush, long strokes, covering the surface before any detail exists.

The pigments come from the earth, so the painting starts there too.

Then the mountains, and everything else that sits on those layers.

Year 2, still learning to trust the order.

This sits on top of the gofun from before.
The base held, now the sky.

Grey mixed with yellow, but the brush doesn’t dip in fully.

Only the tip touches the pigment, the finest part sitting above the grain.

Go deeper, and the coarser sediment comes up with it. The color turns muddy instead of pure.

Silk landscape, second attempt. Still learning what this material asks for.

This goes down before anything else.

Gofun (胡粉), not a color choice, a foundation. ⚪️
Every layer that follows, sky, earth, form, sits on top of this.

Nothing is painted yet. But nothing else works without it.

Silk landscape, second attempt. Still learning what this material asks for.

Silk doesn’t allow a direct sketch. Touch it with graphite, and the line disturbs the surface before the ink ever arrives.

The sketch travels through carbon paper first, sakura branches, transferred without the silk ever meeting a pencil.

Then ink, diluted until it’s ready.

Only then does anything touch the silk itself.

Second attempt at this material. Still learning what it actually allows.

This pigment behaves differently than mineral pigment.🪨

It’s denser. It melts differently with the glue/nikawa (膠) and it takes practice to control.

Once it’s worked correctly, it creates something mineral pigment can’t: water that looks like it’s moving, not painted.

Still refining this one.

One pine needs three colors. 🌲

Indigo mixed with nikawa. Orange. Then green, not “pine green,” something built from all three, none of them looking right on their own.

Only together, layered onto the tree, do they read as catching light.

I’ve made this three times before understanding why the order mattered.

White first. It has to fully settle. Only then does black ink go on top 🖊️

Get the order wrong, and the gaps between dots collapse.

That’s not just a technical flaw, those gaps are what make it read as blossoms catching light, not a solid mass. Too dense, and the tree loses its breath. Too sparse, and it disappears.

The space between the dots carries as much of the composition as the dots themselves.

This is what apprenticeship actually looks like. Not mastery, getting the sequence wrong, then right.

Each dot has space to breathe. 🧘
Too close together, and the tree stops looking alive.

Gofun and ink for the sakura leaves.
Indigo, orange and green being made now, not for this tree. For the pines, still to come.

One technique, applied twice, differently each time.

Follow for how Nihonga actually gets made, not the finished gallery version, the real process behind it.

Year 2, still deciding how much space is enough.

Crushed shell, tapped by hand until it holds.

Refined until it’s clean. Thinned with water until it moves like something you can actually paint with.

None of this looks like paint yet. Somehow, it becomes this.

This is the heron. Finished.

Year 2, still not sure how I got the snow right.

This mountain has no green in it yet ⛰️

Blue first. Then orange. Pale green comes after, not in the beginning.

By the time it looks like a mountain, half the colors that got it there don’t look like mountain colors at all.

This starts as diluted ink, then splits into everything it needs to become shape, shadow, light.

Somewhere in all of this, it starts to look like something.

Year 2, still guessing at half these decisions.

🪶 Save this if you’re curious how a Nihonga landscape gets built from raw pigment!
